:( Sorry to hear about that! I got mugged on the 237 bus in Shepherds bush it was quiet full and people just watched as the guy punched me a few times. When I thought I'd rather loose my iPod mini than my teeth he got what he wanted. It really shook me up. I hope they are able to catch the guys who did it. I see people flaunting all sorts of stuff on the tube and in other public places and it worries me.

I find it very annoying that people will just stand idlely by and not take any action to help.

Just drop them, then stamp on them. Bollocks to just handing them over.

The other alternative is carry some kind of aerosol bleech that you can just pull out and spray them in the eyes with, that'll also do the trick just dandy.

I know what you mean but in todays socity its sometimes better to not get involved.

I was out with my wife a couple of years ago in a Virgin Megastore. It was quite busy and while looking at stuff we noticed a little girl standing in the aisle crying. People were walking past her so we went over and just asked what was wrong.

She'd lost her Mom so we asked what she looked like but she was to upset. We decided to take her to the cashiers so that could PA request out for her but halfway there this woman starts shouting GET OF HER!! And then this bloke pushes me full on the back and starts mouthing of "YOU F**KIN PERVERT WHAT YOU DOING WITH MY DAUGHTER!!!" I tried to explain but by this time the whole shop was looking at me in disgust and we got asked to leave!

Never ever again would I help anyone like this. :(

No I didn't have any security software installed, I just got the thing :(
The police did tell that carrying it around in a laptop bag is not a good idea (I only had a laptop bag though) They recommend backpacks (to disguise what you're carrying) So eenu or anyone else, carry a laptop in a backpack while on the tube!

This is why I always buy stealth laptop bags, my current one I bought years ago, it had a padded compartment but doesn't at all look like a laptop oriented back pack.

The problem with these gangs is that it isn't your teeth you'll lose if you put up a half hearted fight, or doubt yourself, so if you think for one second that they are more than capable of killing you, then you have to hand your stuff over.

Tottenham Hale is a really crappy area, but you can get mugged anywhere. I was first mugged when I attended college (in Debden), and it really shook me up and ended up with me too scared to go in and I subsequently fell back on my studies. It passed a couple of years, and I sort of got over it, mainly by taking up Rugby and sort of toughening up with age, and some advice from my dad, who's a Police Officer. I was then approached by a gang of about 6 lads at Loughton Station, but none of them seemed older than 16, the lairiest one tried it on, reaching in his pocket and implying he had a knife, encroaching my personal space and threatening me. I knew if I stood up to him, the others would lose their courage (if you can call it that) so I told him to 'go away' (but using the f word and probably the little c word) and he pushed me, so i just grabbed him round the throat and told him if he tries anything else i would push my thumbs so hard that I'd embed his larynx in his spinal cord (probably not possible, but sounded crazy and scary enough to work). I then let him go and he was nursing his neck and his mates all ran off.

Anyway, my dad used to be part of the proactive robbery squad, and he told me that the gangs operating on the tube aren't really that hard, and they just want to get it over and done with as easily as possible, if you think you can do some damage to the leader, the others will back off, but you have to try and act scary/unhinged to be able to protect yourself. The flipside to this though, is there is always the chance that you get a gang who will hurt you badly even if you give up your possessions, so to the original poster, you are lucky you didn't get hurt after.

Yeah, the backpack advice is sound advice, try not to watch tv or films on your iPod or iPhone when your on the tube, and try to look a bit insane if you find yourself alone on the tube with a gang.then wait till the doors are about to close, and get off before they can. (only really works on the district line...)

London is a crap place to live. I'm glad I only go there for a few hours as a tourist every now and then.

From everything I have heard from here and other forums from people that live in London, there seems to be a lot of muggings and stuff there. Is it really this bad? I never have been there.

London has a population in excess of 8 million. I don't think it has more problems than cities of similar or greater size, but I do think that the problems which do occur are more widely reported because that sort of thing is extremely uncommon in the rest of the United Kingdom.
