Multi monitor as single resolution

Is it possible to set my internal monitor and secondary monitor (1080p) to make it think it's a single monitor at 3840x1080 resolution?

Short answer is no, as far as I am aware. The closest you get is extending your desktop over two monitors.

I am not precisely sure what benefit there would be in having your computer believe that two monitors were one?
