I have been finding some weirdness with how my 3 or 4 monitor setup work on my Mac Studio and thought I would share what I found which conflicts directly with Apple’s instructions/recommendations at least using the USB-C/TB5 ports.
TLDR: It appears that the order at which we plug in our monitors when the monitors are different matters a lot on the Mac. Apple recommends plugging in the highest resolution monitor first and in order of importance. My experience is that it may not be quite true.
I have 4 monitors at my disposal:
OG ASD (27” 5K 60Hz)
HP 732PK (32” 4K 60Hz TB4)
Kuycon P40K (40” 5K2K 120Hz DP 1.4 Alt mode)
Kuycon G32P (32” 6K 60Hz DP 1.4 Alt mode)
If not plugged in in the correct order, the ASD and the HP simply do not get any video signal (TB/USB hub is detected but no video) and the P40K loses its frequency option in the MacOS menu and defaults to 60Hz. The G32P seems to be the only one which never has any problem no matter when I plug it.
In order to have correct video signal on every monitor, the only orders which works is: HP/ASD/P40K/G32P
If the G32P is plugged before the P40K, the P40K drops to 60Hz.
If the ASD or the HP is plugged in after any of the Kuycons, they display nothing.
If the ASD is plugged before the HP, the HP displays nothing.
So it turns out to be 4K->5K->5K2K120Hz->6K which is from lowest to larger Resolutionxfrequency. Not sure if I am doing anything wrong but it drove me insane at the beginning.
