Multicast rate?

Does anyone know what the multicast rate option does for the Airport?

They are actually quite slow speeds ranging from 1mbps to 6 mbps, so I doubt it is the actual signalling speed of the thing....

Increasing the multicast rate can improve performance of things like audio or video streaming. However, it effectively results in reduced range by setting a "floor" below which devices won't be able to communicate with the base station.
