not sure what the hell is wrong with my mac, but everything is crashing on me at once and i can't stand it anymore.

something is very wrong, cos just now, my desktop icons kept disappearing and appearing and they ultimately disappeared to never come back, so then i started moving my cursor around and wherever it or a dragged window touched, white blotches appeared (do you know what i'm talking about?). then i had to restart.

any idea what might be going on here?

    thanks...

What version OSX are you running? What kind on upgrade did you do ?

    Have you tried repairing permissions?

Sounds to me like either something in osx is corrupt (which could mean a bad disk), or you have bad memory (or perhaps even the main board).

    If repair permissions doesn't work:

If you got apple care, try the techtools app that came with it and run a full scan. Failing that, stick your original OSX dvd in and run the diagnostic test (it says how to load it on the disk - I think you have to reboot and hold a key down). That should tell you if the hardware has gone bad.

If the hardware passes, I'd say back up all your work and reinstall OSX. Do an erase and install to ensure nothing gets left on the disk, and don't skip the bit where it checks the installation disk (I had similar problems before, and it turned out to be a scratch on the install disk, which somehow resulted in a corrupt file being installed, which lead to firefox crashing on certain pages and address book breaking - but not until I'd been using the computer for at least 6 months!)

It could possibly be bad prebinding. Try opening terminal, and if it opens, type:

    sudo update_prebinding -root / -force

If you can't open terminal, then reboot and login with ">console" without quotes, and type it there.

See if this cleans up your problem.

It should just sit there for a very long time. When it prints another prompt, then it's done.

This isn't a crash report that you posted. It's an excerpt from your Console log. Very different beast. If you want us to look at crashlogs, you should post those.

    However:

    Code:
