In reference to the Engadget video can someone please explain to me why you need $100 dvi dual link display adapters to set up external monitors on the new iMac. Wouldn't standard $30 mini display port to divi/vga cables work to set up multiple monitors? Please help I am really confused..

Only Dual link DVI can output 2560x1600 resolution. With a single DVI link, the highest supported standard resolution is 2.75 megapixels (including blanking interval) at 60 Hz refresh. For practical purposes, this allows a maximum screen resolution at 60 Hz of 1,915 × 1,436 pixels (standard 4:3 ratio), 1,854 × 1,483 pixels (5:4 ratio), or 2,098 × 1,311 (widescreen 16:10 ratio).

If you got a 1080p monitor you want to connect. Its no problem.

Then the adapters for 30 bucks works great. Hower all the mini dp/thunderbolt port to hdmi, dvi etc. Cant handle 2560x1600 on those dell monitors. The cheap adapters is limited to 1080p

Dual-link DVI is required for 2560x1600 resolution. Another option would be to use mDP to DP adapter but especially older monitors do not have DP.

Limit of one mDP to DVI adapter per port.

Otherwise, DP can support multiple monitors per port, depending on hardware/software configuration.
