google iOS 7.1 download and download the ispw file for that specific device. Once its downloaded, hold down on the option key (Mac) or the shift key (Windows) and click the “Check for Update” button in the Summary pane. Browse to the .ipsw file you downloaded and select it.

This method seem to be more reliable and efficient given the huge file sizes.

iTunes saves the IPSW when you update a device, so if all of your devices are the same model, iTunes will reuse that file.

iTunes saves the IPSW when you update a device, so if all of your devices are the same model, iTunes will reuse that file.

As he said, iTunes actually does the same thing for you but once you have to search around for the ipsw
