I was lead to believe, from scouring these forums, that double tapping the home button will give a list of recent apps.

if I open a multitasking app like the new eBay app (updated today) then close it using the home key and then reopen it it's righ where it left off as it should be.

Now if I double tap hold down eBay and delete it from the list the next time I open eBay it opens from scratch.

So the list in the double tap screen is not a list of recent apps but a task manager to what is currently multitasking. For those apps that start from scratch just don't have the multitasking programmer into them.

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

From what I understand, iOS4 accomplishes it multitasking by allowing developers to use one or more specific api's in their updated app.

In this case, eBay is saving its state into RAM for fast restart from where you left off. "Deleting" it from the quick switcher just forces it out of RAM. So it's not truly running in the background.

What's the difference? Well a true background running app would update itself. (like a video that keeps going) An iOS4 app using the saved state thingy may be very, very fast at updating once you switch to it, but it isn't actually updating until you switch to it.

(note: this is how I understand it, and I'm sure there are slight exceptions like GPS, music apps, etc.)

When minimized everything enters into the freeze state and will update after you relaunch it again. The only app that doesn't freeze is the music.
