The way it works with the keyboard cmd+space is exactly where I got the idea since that is how it works. The problem is that the dimming and blurring obscures the app beneath.

Swipe down, swipe right to access the spotlight widget doesn’t work well at all. It’s too many motions for something you’d want to be as quick as possible. Plus this “widget” version of spotlight isn’t as functional. It doesn’t automatically bring up the keyboard, which just adds another motion and it doesn’t let you drag apps around the way normal spotlight does.

I agree with you 100%

Here's what is like to see: -

Short swipe down spotlight to come back. Just the dedicated spotlight interface. There's a nice symmetry about that too with short and long swipe from the bottom also doing different things.

For the blur, probably what it should do is, when you pick up an icon to drag it should either go more transparent/less blurred or just get out of the way completely.

Completely agree with this and have provided feedback - hope others will do the same.

I really liked this implementation in iOS 10 with spotlight universally available but also how it showed the clock when you slightly swipe down (without fully activating spotlight). This was really helpful for quickly checking the time and battery status when in a full screen app that does not show the menu bar.

I'll do a feature request tonight. All bug reports this year so I'm due one ;)
