Hello everyone,

Anyone know of a RAR compressor for mac that takes advantage of multiple cores? I'm currently using SimplyRAR v1.09 which is GREAT, but it does not do multithread processing which means its REALLY SLOW!

Any alternatives or advice would be appreciated. My need is to compress files down to their smallest size for backup, and thus far the best at this task is RAR. .zip, though fast, don't make the files small enough.

Thanks!

7zip beats RAR

Thanks! Never heard of 7zip before. Any 7zip compressor programs that are multi-thread enabled? Which app do you use? Trying out 7zX and it seems to only be a single core as well, and doesn't update you as to how long the compression will take which is a drag.

Any other suggestions?

I did a test on a 539.7mb folder which contained a multiple file types, but a majority of the data was .wav files. To my surprise, RAR compression used up to 500% CPU and compressed the folder down to 170.8mb in just 25 seconds!! While 7zip maxed at 200% CPU and compressed the folder down to 202.7mb in 2m10sec!

So in what I need compression to do, RAR was the clear winner!

Now the next step is finding a good, but hopefully not too expensive RAR compressor for mac. It seems all these programs use the same algorithm, so they will all take the same amount of time to compress. HOWEVER, it seems my free "simplyRAR" only uses one core! So it must be using an older RAR algorithm. Anyway, I'd love suggestions for the most cost effective solution to compress using the latest RAR compression.

Thanks!!

Try Keka, it is free and multithreaded as far as I know for 7zip. http://www.kekaosx.com/en/

Entropy!
It rocks for creating RAR files on Mac. It integrates well with Finder.
It uses multicore processing power.
