I don’t use Apple Music so why does my music app default to searching in Apple Music when I start typing in the search bar of the music app to find a song I want to play from my local playlists on my iPhone? Apple Music is ticked off in the settings page of the music app so no elements of Apple Music should be present in my music just like it was in iOS 17. Is there a way to stop search from defaulting to Apple Music in the music app on iOS 18?

Because they want you to subscribe to Apple Music, perhaps? Looks like steering behavior to me.
Why would that be the case? i have Apple music toggled OFF in the settings of the music app to remove all elements of Apple music from my music app just like it was on ios 17

When - ever - Apple respected user settings?
Whenever you install an iOS update, Bluetooth is turned on, although it was explicitly turned off before!

"They" always know better than you or you're simply "searching it wrong". /s

I just updated to the 18.1 release candidate and the bug is still there so Apple did not fix it in the latest upcoming release of iOS 18

I have this same issue and instead of making me consider subscribing to Apple Music, it has only hardened my resolved to never give in. Apple - this is why you keep getting sued for anti-competitive measures.

Shame on Apple if they did this on purpose, I’d like to believe this is simply a bug that needs to be addressed

This is no run of the mill defect - it is so obvious that ANY amount of testing would have found it. Make no mistake - it is Apple steering you to subscribe to Apple Music even after you have explicitly turned off Apple Music in settings.

I doubt it. having the music app function this way makes me not want to subscribe to Apple Music even more than before this bug was introduced

The Apple Music app on Android only has Apple Music, no local play option available.
Do the same thing Android users do - use a different app. There are loads of offline music player apps on iOS.
Apple did not lock you into playing their music on their app. It's been DRM free for ages.

If you find a 3rd party solution that will upload my music library from my Mac to the cloud and make it available to all my MacOS and iOS devices like iCloud music library - I am all ears.

I agree 100%. This would make me want to leave apple all together, not embrace them more. But that is the kind of thing apple does. I am an apple music subscriber though currently. I used to use youtube music but it was by far the WORST streaming music service imaginable for so many reasons I can't even recall. Tidal spammed Waze multiple times a day despite it being turned off in settings so I quit that. Spotify spammed me its own podcasts multiple times a day no matter how many times or how many ways I tried to stop it so I quit that as well. If I'm paying for a service I WILL NOT put up with being force fed ads all day.

Ironically, I'm with apple music because it is the only service that doesn't irritate me with ads or pop ups all day.

100%. It’s just obnoxious behavior on Apple’s part. As if we don’t pay enough for their hardware to also be constantly be bothered by their subscription crap.

Guys I just updated to iOS 18.2 RC and this issue has been finally fixed.
I had not turned that Show Apple Music toggle off in Settings before seeing this thread. Wasn’t aware of it but had always been annoyed by seeing Apple Music appearing every time I launched the Music app. As you noted, with that toggle off, none of that appears now, on 18.2 RC.

It seems like I spoke too soon. This “bug” is still present even in iOS 18.2 Golden Master / Release Candidate. Arghhhh

The only sign of Apple Music I see, with that toggle off, is in search where I see the option to search in Apple Music or my library which is fine. Previously anytime I opened the app I saw an Apple Music screen, I no longer do with the toggle off. So I’m happy. I personally have no need to see the search option of Apple Music as I’m not a subscriber, I will only be searching my library, but others may want to see search results in one or the other.
