Music File Converter?

What's the best free app (or small fee) for converting various sound files I make/find into mp3 files?

(Quicktime Pro is not an option right now).

SoundConverter is not free, but it is comprehensive. If you don't pay the $10 US shareware fee, you are limited to 500 K files.
