Music management in itunes

I have the manual manage music box checked and have previously dragged and dropped music from itunes library to iphone but this ability has vanished is there any way i can get it back???

Just plug in your iPod and the click on it's icon on the sidebar, then on the summary tab check the box "Manually manage music and videos"

I have that box already checked. It lets me manually manage it sometime but other it wont. I must be doing something but i've not idea what, any ideas as its getting quite annoying?
