Apple Music Music Match - how does it work?

I've been subscribed three months now, and I can see no difference to my songs library on the iPhone...all still MP3's

I thought Match swapped out all of your songs, regardless of source (mine are 100% from my own CD's and itunes opurchases) I do not use iTunes on the desktop.

It is just the phone.. and I have had sync st to on the whole time.

So how do you check it is working, and how do I use it exactly?
