iPod music sounds like its skipping

like a small glitch, every so often, as if a record is skipping - musics stored on an external hd - this the isse?

How is the drive connected? Is it happening at the same spot on the same song(s) each time? Do you get skipping if you use a different music playing app such as VLC or even QuickTime? 🙂
