I'm looking for decent metal band suggestions. I've sort of run my course right now on bands and wading through the glut takes time, money, and frustration.

Currently my top 5 favorite bands are (in no particular order)

  • Lamb Of God
  • Mastodon
  • The Empire Shall Fall
  • Throwdown
  • Meshuggah

I like the pure rage of Hatebreed.. but let's face it, every song sounds the same. Not a real fan of metal bands with a keyboardist. I'm not a big fan of sing-songery, so I'm not a big fan of metal bands with ladies (sorry ladies) and consequently, not a real fan of 'classic' metal with high-pitched singers. No hair bands. No stoner-rock/metal bands. Not a huge fan of female metal singers. Addendum: overuse of the double bass does not please me.

I really like the band portion of Deftones, but I really dislike the whiney singer!

Any suggestions for me?

EDIT: Hopefully they will be available via iTunes, as there's no decent record stores anywhere near me.

Have you tried Behemoth, Chimaira, or DevilDriver?

I hope this thread gets more replies...I'd like to check out some metal bands I might not know.

I know you said you don't like keyboardists but maybe check out older Children of Bodom too. Pre-Are You Dead Yet?

Lets start with two big ones, Pantera and Slayer? Machine Head, Kreator and Trivium might be worth a notation as well, decent trash metal.

If you like some fast stuff like death metal, then I have several bands that I can recommend: Nile, Misery Index, Aborted, Decapitated, Hate Eternal, Vader, Vital Remains, Necrophagist, Death, Deicide, Carcass...

Try Emmure. An acquired taste, but I enjoy them.
Bring Me The Horizon's two latest albums are not bad.
Damnation AD are another acquired taste.
Austrian Death Machine are pretty good as well.

Hellhammer - who hasn't heard of Pantera and Slayer?

You never know ;) I thought about Metallica too but I think that's too obvious :p Sometimes people (at least I) forget bands or have only heard bad albums so I thought it's worth mentioning.

Check out a band called The Human Abstract, specifically, their 2008 album called Midhaven. It's found a permanent place in my car's CD changer. It's one of my favorite albums. It's metal, but there's melody to it, not a bunch of loud guitars, banging on drums, and a singer sounding like he's forcing a burp out.

I have 3 Chimaira albums. Just couldn't get into DD or Behemoth, but I'll give them another shot.

Based on suggested bands, I've run through songs on iTunes and:

  • DevilDriver <Will give a 2nd listen>
  • Emmure <Will give a 2nd listen>
  • Damnation AD <Will give a 2nd listen>

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes & Yes

But 3,4,& 5 didn't fit my bill so well. Haven't yet heard D*Metal or B*metal that interested me in all.

Pandora has helped me find new music that I enjoy. Enter an artist or song, and it creates a "station" that plays music similar.

Sometimes, it goes off the trail a bit. Sometimes I enjoy it, other times it's just annoying. Eventually it gets the hint when I click the thumbs down several times in a row and it gets back on track.

Misery Index, Aborted, Decapitated, Hate Eternal, Vader, Vital Remains, Necrophagist, Death, Deicide, Carcass, Five Finger Death Punch, DevilDriver, Throwdown, etc..

Alright so I mean no insult but is anyone else humored by these names? I mean they are just too fitting its almost hilarious.

IKillYouWithMyGeetar sounds like a good name to try out.

P.s. love you guys. :D

Times of Grace. It's Jesse and Adam from Killswitch Engage's new project. Their first album ships on the 14th.

If you like it a bit varied and progged, maybe Opeth is something you should give a listen if you haven't already. My favorite band, that is.

They are quite varied, so the sound depends on which album you would get.

Please give As I Lay Dying a listen. Every song of theirs is amazing. Definitely one of my favorite bands. All That Remains is very good as well.

Damn I have a lot of recommendations to catch up on. Thanks for the suggys and keep em coming!

Well...they may not fit your bill but I absolutely love the pure, over-the top, obsurdity of Manowar. They actually refer to themselves as the, "Kings of Metal." You would probably like some of their songs. Though, some of their other songs are completely opposite of what you seem to like. They're great.

What about Cradle of Filth, Agalloch or Absu? Do you like them?

One of my good friends is the guitarist for this band. They're just taking off and admittedly I'm not a fan of any form of metal, much less death metal, but the shows I've been to have been pretty fun, with a great turnout, which is good for my buddy.

Check em' out!

And, if you're a fan of stupid, VERY inappropriate, off the wall, and overall pointless, but entertaining and hilarious metal. Steel panther is your band.

+1 for Behemoth and Trivium. Two great bands.

Not necessarily 'metal' but I find them talented and hard rock music: Within the Ruins and The Black Dahlia Murder.
