I went to which is a pretty good music video site. It says that you have to have Netscape 4.7x on a Mac to view them.

Is it a bad idea to download Netscape to my new G5? Are there alternatives?

fig tree
they don't support os x. you need netscape 4.x in os 8.5-9.2.2. at least that's what they told me. i bitched to them about it to no avail--6 different emails from 6 different addresses, *exactly the same form letter back each time* said:
Not supported by LAUNCH:

Netscape Navigator 5.6 and 6.0 or higher for PC or Mac
Mac OS X
here's my answers from the feedback form or w/e, quoted back to me in the email from their tech support

What firewall software do you currently have installed?
Mac OS X Firewall

Type your feedback here:
why don't you support Mac OS X? It's
been out since 2001 and ships on every
current mac. According to the page found
you support Windows Media Player 10 for
Mac, but that software does not exist.
The latest version is 9. I would love to
watch launch music videos, and am an SBC
Yahoo! DSL customer, but I value using a
Macintosh above watching music videos
online. A final question--you support
earlier versions of Netscape, but not
newer ones, which means that Gecko-based
browsers such as Firefox are not
supported. I would just like to know
why. If you're just going to send some
form letter, or some stupid exuse, don't

sorry if that's not very coherent or w/e, i was kinda pissed off.
here's what they said in return

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Music.

Unfortunately, at this time the only browsers which are capable of
supporting LAUNCHcast for the Mac are Netscape versions 4.5-4.79. You
will need to install one of these versions (as well as the Microsoft
Media Player) in order to stream your personalized LAUNCHcast station.

For a free copy of Netscape, please download from:

To install the Windows Media Player for the Mac, please follow the
directions below.

Please point your browser to:

A) Select "Player 7.01 for the Mac (OS 8.1 and Later)" from the
pull-down menu.

B) Click the "Download Now" button. Windows Media Player for Macintosh
will download to the location specified in your browser (the default
location is the desktop). Be aware of the download location, as you will
need to install the software after the download has completed.

C) After downloading, close any open applications, then double-click the
installer icon and follow the instructions for installing the software.

LAUNCHcast requires the following in order to properly stream media

* Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000 Professional, XP Home, or
* Pentium II, 233MHz or faster
* at least 64MB RAM
* Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher
* Windows Media Player 6.4 or higher
* Macromedia Flash 4.0 or higher

* Mac OS 8.5 or higher
* 200MHz PowerPC (iMac OK)
* at least 64MB RAM
* Netscape 4.5 - 4.79
* Windows Media Player 7.01 or higher
* Macromedia Flash 4.0 or higher

AOL has music videos in quicktime which will work with OSX, just go to and look for music then videos. The quality is not quite the level of launch on windows but it's better than trying netscape and classic (which barely works, I wouldn't recommend it though). As much as I dislike AOL at least they support Mac OS X for their music videos.

Isnt firefox netscape
not according to yahoo. Yahoo insists you use a very outdated 4.7 netscape in classic, it will work, but the video is extremely small to the point where it's barely visible anyway and I was unable to adjust the quality. I have found no way yet to get yahoo music videos to work in OS X.
