Must imessages be on to use digital touch?

I had imessages turned on, added myself in apple watch friends and tried to send a digital touch to myself and it works

I disabled imessage and it works too. So does imessage need to be on to be able to use digital touch?

I don't think so. I though the person you were digital touching just had to have an apple watch paired to their phone. But I'm probably wrong.
