Well I installed an extra 320 gig SATA drive in my Mac Pro and I have had one slight annoyance with it. It tends to spin down after about a half hour of it being idle. I know there is a setting for the startup drive but this is an extra hard drive for storing all my crap.

Anybody know an app or some kind of trick to keep this damn thing awake?

Uncheck "[] Put hard drive(s) to sleep whenever possible." in the Energy Saver panel of the System Preferences.

I did that already but it still does it, I already specified this.

I assumed you were confused since you mentioned sleeping only the startup drive -- the Energy Saver preference is global, affecting all internal and external drives.

It's possible that your drive has a "feature" that allows the drive's controller to sleep it independently of the OS. What model/manufacturer is the drive? You may want to check the documentation on their site, specifically looking to see if there's a jumper setting for the drive controller to sleep or brake the disk.

It's also possible that there's a problem -- have you repaired permissions and/or run TechTool/DiskWarrior/etc on the drive?

Techtool says all the drives are ok.

I'll deal with it and maybe I'll do some more research if it really bugs me.

The hard drives spin down if I leave the comp for about an hour, so it doesn't happen randomly (thankfully).
