My humble AirPod review
I've had my AirPods for about 3 weeks now, and so far I'm really pleased! The feeling of being TRULY wireless is...magical, lol. But really, it's nice not having to mess around with ANY wires. Like many though, I do have concerns that I'm eventually going to lose the charging case or one of the "Pods" at some point.
Sound quality is good, not great. Better than expected for me personally. There isn't any active noise cancellation or anything like that but they seal up in your ears pretty well and prevent a lot of outside noise from leaking in. I'm not an audiophile by any means, but these seem to have a pretty balanced sound, leaning a bit more into the treble spectrum and not very bass-heavy. I've actually noticed a few different sounds in some songs that I listen to regularly that I've never noticed before, so that's pretty neat.
Build quality is solid. The Pods feel more "substantial" in my hand than I expected. They don't feel cheap or or thin or hollow by any means. And I really like how they have a sort of magnetic "grab" when you put them in the charging case. While they feel like a quality item in your hands, I do feel they are still a bit over priced. $100-$150 seems like more of a reasonable price range, but they're obviously not priced too far above that.
They fit and sit really well - for me. I know this will vary widely depending on the shape of your ear. For me personally I put them in and they stay perfectly still. I run, walk, jog, lift weights, and everything in between. They don't shift, they don't fall out, they don't give you ear-fatigue. I actually forget they're even in - which I think is the highest compliment you could give.
Other random thoughts...
- I really like how I can set the tap function for each Pod (left pod - tap twice to skip song, right pod - tap twice to stop/play).
- You can use 1 pod instead of two if you prefer (I like having 1 in my ear while I'm out walking so I can hear what's going on around me).
- As many have said before, the pairing/connection process is great. Put one or both Pods in your ear and they "sense" that they're in - you hear a little confirmation chime and you're ready to play.
- Siri works well with the AirPods, though the performance was a little slow and lagged for me (I blame that more on my iPhone 6)
I might be overstating this, but they're almost addicting in a way. When I'm done working out or going for a walk I tend to just leave them in and carry about my business until I NEED to take them out. They're seamless, comfortable, convenient.
Overall I would say they've been an excellent purchase. I've tried JayBirds, Beats earpods, and a few others - I prefer the AirPods over all others and it's not even close.
Once they're able to make these a little smaller and a bit more affordable, I could see these being an accessory that will be very widely adopted (so many applications these can be used for aside from just music).
