PowerBook G4 (rev a 12") - no problems
Power Mac G5 (dual 2ghz G5/PCI-X refurb) - DOA
Power Mac G3 (beige) - works great
Apple //e - works great

The latter two of the four being freebies.

My newer Macs seem far less reliable than my older ones did.

IIci: no problem (still works!)
SE/30: no problem (sold)
8500: no problem (still worked as of a few months ago when I got rid of it)
Beige G3: still works

Ti Powerbook: failed drive
Other Ti Powerbook: two failed drives
G5 Dual 2.5: dead powersupply, processor, and logic board after 7 months ownership (still in the shop after 10 days waiting for parts, btw)

I think Apple is cutting corners to increase their profits and their quality is suffering. It's a shame that when their OS is finally gaining unprecedented respect in the industry, their hardware reliability is going to crap. Time after time Apple seems to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

powerbook g4 - lcd replaced once. lcd needs replacing again, battery charging mechanism had to be repaired as well

powermac g5 1.8 dual - motherboard replaced three times

ipod photo - replaced due to stuck scroll wheal

ipod shuffle - fault headphone jack

as you can see 100 percent failure.

Ah, I was quite specific with the thread title - Apple computer hardware failure rate... My iPod 3G 20GB and iPod shuffle are both running great. The 3G hasn't quite got the battery life it used to, but that's to be expected....

my issues

I have had a few issues with my macs. Nothing TOO major (maybe the iBook and QS! :p )

iMac G4 1.0 ghz 17'- the arm broke and the screen would not go back up
iMac 223 rev A- CD-ROM tray would not go back in (my fault)
QS 733- Case and PS were replaced after the PS caught fire after a curcit at my friends house blew.
iBook 500- screen and case after I got hit on my bike and landed on a rock. IT WAS NOT MY FAULT! I was hit by another bike.....yah...thats right

Macs:

1st gen 5Gb iPod: Never had any problems(3 years old)
1.8Ghz Power Mac G5: Never had any problems(coming up to being 1 year old)

Now on to the Pcs:

Packerd Bell CD Drive: 14 years old and I ripped it apart about 4 years ago

Some old laptop sitting in the garage(Like 11 years old)

No Name 350Mhz Pc: Kinda just faded away after 4 years or so, so I ripped it apart(8 years old)

Dell latitude 400Mhz 128 ram: Runs like new and is super thin I just can't remember the password to get on!(7 years old)

Dell 4800 2.4Ghz: Runs great wih 1gb of ram, my dads company computer(3 years old)

Compaq 2.6Ghz: Got so packed with spyware and crap that after 6 months it was unusable(still running down stairs and the screen has a dead pixel about 2 1/2 years old)

Hp Laptop 1.4Ghz: Runs good that's all I got to say(almost 1 year old)

So I have been great with my Macs but the PCs are just OK. Non of the PCs were mine personally.

I've had fourteen macs so far. And have had two problems. The first one was a four year old Performa 6400 had its hard drive fail. The other one was a Power Mac G4 DA's motherboard failed after four years when I dropped a glass of water on the computer. This was obviously poor engineering on Apples part :D . Oh wait I almost forgot a third one was my IIcx died last year you'd think they could at least make a computer that would last for more than 16years. ;)

Mac II - purchased new in 1987. Struck by lightning in the late 80s, machine turned off, but booted back up and has worked perfectly ever since (booted it up just tonight). Entirely original components, even the battery on the motherboard.

Switched with a Power Mac G4 400 MHz - still seeing heavy daily use as my brother's main computer. No problems whatsoever.

Dual 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 - in use every day for professional video editing, DVD authoring, etc. Absolutely zero problems.

1.33 GHz 12" Superdrive PowerBook - used for 4-5 hours per day. Not a single hardware problem.

This thread is about computers, but both of my iPods have been 100% problem free, as has my brother's.

If I were to list my PCs, this list would look a lot different. Let's just say that there's a reason I switched.

Mac LC - No problem. (Eventually dumped after about 9 years, kids broke the ports on back, not worth fixing).
Performa 6300 - No problem. (Still going strong).
PM G3/233 - No problem. (Still going strong).
PM G3/350 - No problem. (Still going strong).
iMac G4/800 - No problem. (Still going strong - in spite of it's screen getting mashed in a fall).
PM G5 2x2.0 - No problem. (Still going strong).

eMac 1.25GHz Combo (October 19th, 2005 will be it's 1st birthday. No problems there)
1st Gen Silver iPod Mini (1st had video issues, 2nd has been good so far)
512MB iPod Shuffle (Birthday present in Feb. 2005, no problems there)
iMac 233MHz G3 Bondi Blue (7yrs old and yet to have a problem)

All my Macs have been pretty reliable so far.

HP Pavilion ze4427wm laptop computer (HD died after only 1 1/2 years of usage. That is pretty sad.)
Compaq Presario 5000t (5yrs old and never had a problem)
Dell Dimension 4700 (Almost 2 months old and no problems...yet)

People referencing windows machines... I never had a problem with IBM, Gateway, Powerspec PC or HP hardware. I just didn't like the OS they ran :)

I'm not trashing my HP, Compaq, or Dell. It's just I think that (depending on what model you buy) Apple is always gonna be more reliable. I love my HP and still do, it's just that after only 1 1/2 yrs of average usage the HD dying to me was horrible. I wanted to beat the crap out of it.

me personly i think the home built pc's are way better than any dell compaq gateway hp they all come with a bunch of junk installed on the hdd and most of it is stuff u will never use i woud only have a home built pc. i own a power macintosh G3 AIO 266mhz 192 mb ram 4 gig hdd it was bought from a school auction about 2 weeks ago and to my knolege its never had any problems. my pc is home built with a biostar nforce 2 mb with a amd 3000+ athlon xp 512 mb ddr ram 100 gig hdd i had it for 7 months and it has never had any problems yet. but boy do i love mac's now just waiting to upgrade this mac to a G4

While on the subject of AppleCare - note to Apple. I don't like talking on the phone to someone with a barely understandable accent with a two second time delay who knows more about nuclear physics than she does a powerbook (i.e f**k all). People pay a lot of money for their machines and Applecare if they extend it. They deserve better than some untrained idiot in an Indian call center who won't leave the predetermined script.

I couldn't agree with you more. I phoned them to check on the status of my iBook repair earlier this week only to be on hold for 15 minutes whilst this numpty read through the notes and then they asked me "Is the problem still happenin?" to which I replied "I dunno, you tell me - YOU STILL HAVE IT!. I then just asked for a status on the repair and what had been done to rectify the problems I had been experiencing....cue another 20 minutes on hold during which time he tried to track down where my iBook was. He finally came back to say that they would ship it and I could expect it within 1 to 2 weeks. I put the phone down and immediately received a call from our reception to say that my iBook had been delivered an hour ago. Useless!!

Back to the original point though:

iMac with faulty screen
iBook repaired 3 times (logic board, LCD, Trackpad, cables, top cover).
iPod with faulty headphone socket

I've just taken delivery of a brand new 15" PowerBook and it appears to be ok so far....fingers crossed.

I know. You really end up biting your tongue because these people are so inept.

How many times did I have to confirm my address?

And the long, long silences whilst they 'check their notes' - 'Hello, are you still there?'

Please, please, please can we have the Irish tech support guys back and not these idiots.

Yes the Irish techs were much better.

Well the irony of it. My brand new four hour old PowerBook appears to have a fault. The backspace key appears to delete 2 characters at a time. One character on the downstroke and one on the up. How annoying is that!

Not quite as bad as my experience with Orange (a UK mobile phone operator). I switched my contract over to them this year because they have a great student deal, for the last 8 years I've been with Cellnet/BTCellnet/O2 (all the same company)... ANYWAY, I called up Orange to ask them to "activate" international roaming, and the guy said nothing much! For over a minute! I said "hello?".... nothing. I just hung up! A few minutes later I got a SIM update, and my phone was ready to go.

You should see my saga - thread

Oh man that sucks dude. Now you're frightening me. I can't even be bothered to phone Applecare at the minute because I know that it'll just frustrate and aggravate me. I can live with it until Monday I think.

I have a 1994 PowerBook 150 that still works as well as it ever did.

I have a 1997 PowerBook 3400c (what a difference three years made!) that still works fine.

I have a 2001 dual-800 Quicksilver tower that has been rock-solid despite my adding all kinds of third-party upgrades.

I have a first-generation iPod that I bought with the Quicksilver that has never had a problem; the battery is still going strong.

I've had a 2005 G5 iMac for a couple months without any problems. With it I got the new color 60GB iPod, and it too has worked great so far.

I guess I'm getting all the good luck that others are missing.

I wouldn't be surprised to see quality slide in general. Computers have gotten a lot cheaper in the last few years as manufacturing moved to China. Something's got to give.

Dell PC = £300
Apple Power Mac = £1,200

I don't expect the quality of Apple computers to slide!!

Man...I've had my iBook for about 4 years now, and ignored the recall so I did have to recently send it in for the logic board issue. But other than that problem I have had NO issues with either my iBook or my 350Mghz BW powermac thats like 6 years old. NONE!!!

And when I did have to call apple about the iBook issue they were EXTREMELY helpful!!!! Click that and read it! Good story! Peace!
