Thing is I was with someone and trying to show it off, that's why it was embarrasing. And never again will I try to use it at McDonald's I'll just use a card. Hold your phone out the window? They hold a scanner out their window? Kind of stupid.

Spent an extra 15 minutes behind an idiot at the Publix a few days ago who was trying to use Apple pay with an iPhone 5 or 5S. Needless to say there was no software nor NFC chip. She had over a $100 of purchases and said she had used it at a store before and did not understand what was wrong. When I told her that her 5/5S would never use Apple pay she told me to mind my own business and walked out of the store.

I'm going to give some negativity. As an Englishman, this is a ridiculously impractical idea.

If you have to remove a card from your wallet to make a payment, just do it! There are indeed the same amount of steps to making an apple pay transaction than a normal debit card! It takes roughly 10 seconds to pay by card. It works, just stick with it, or pay by cash.

I'm not sure on the legal implications, but using it whilst driving would be illegal here too. That and you look like a major idiot using your phone to pay for something.

iPhone will be able to wipe your arse next... And it will make a **** job of that too.
Wow, such a negative nelly. Unless you have a contactless debit/credit card then paying with Apple Pay would be less steps than a card payment - tapping in a PIN number is 4 steps in itself.

Also using your phone to pay wouldn't be illegal since you are stationary for the time you're using it, it's only when your car is actually moving that you shouldn't use your phone. It would be pretty difficult to pay by any means if you're doing 30mph through the Drive-Thru.

Finally, I bet people said the same thing when people started paying by card instead of cash - you'll only look an idiot while nobody knows what you're doing, once it's more widespread the people using cards will look like idiots using ancient technology ;)

You can educate ignorance but you can't fix stupid.

(and where does Publix have NFC-capable terminals? none here have NFC that I can tell)

Went to the drive through and I said Apple pay and when he pulled the machine to bring it out the window it came unplugged and took a few minutes to reset. I was just sitting there face palming. I just paid with cash after that. So embarrassing. Never again.

When I went to McDonald's one time, I tried to pay with my card and the credit card machine was down. I simply stole my food. So embarrassing. Never again will I pay for anything. /s

Would you rather than you hand your phone to them instead? After all, you did tried to show it off by using Apple Pay at the drive thru.

I used my iPhone 6+ at McDonald's a few days ago. Of course I used it IN STORE and it worked just fine. Sorry, there's no way I would ever use Apple Pay at the drive thru.

Same holds true for digital proof of insurance. Really? You're going to hand a cop your phone and risk him dropping it? Makes no sense to me.

Did you even read this thread and see the correct procedure for using Apple Pay at the drive thru? You do not hand your phone to them at all.

Did I mention handing them the phone? No. I mentioned not handing a phone to a police officer.

Leaning out the window trying to reach the sensor? No thanks.

Their terminals are brand new and likely DO have NFC now but does not matter when someone is using a iPhone 5/5S.

If I were not behind this person, I would think it was funny too. This is the same person who I have seen walking down the isles while "grazing". A term given to people who eat their fill from the shelves without paying.:p

I'm not sure how you guys do drive throughs in Britain, but in the US, people almost always bring the vehicle to a stop (i.e. cease driving) when paying for their order or picking up their order. :D

1) You didn't do anything wrong by wanting to use Apple Pay.

2) The mistake made with the NFC machine was not made by you.

In light of points 1 and 2, there was no reason for you to be embarrassed at the time. However, you should be embarrassed for making this thread and for using logical fallacy (Argumentum Ad Misericordiam) as the foundation for your "never again" position.

IMO, there are a few models of PIN pads that accept NFC that don't look like they would, like the Verifone 915 that a lot of US retailers are putting in to get ready for EMV (Chip and Pin). It doesn't have the NFC wireless icon on it, or those four green lights at the top like most NFC terminals have.

As a former resident of England, I know for a fact that McDonalds there have a similar machine for those in the drive thru to use chip and pin cards. There is no difference between that and the one in the US.

Maybe you should keep your negativity in check, especially when it makes you look foolish.

Properly trained, it should be seamless. See McDonald's training manual below. However, it's most likely simply posted on the wall and they get no actual training.

Wouldn't it just be easier of them to put a small, weatherproof,  Pay-compatiable NFC receiver on the drive through window or something? It would seem safer than holding a big piece of equipment out the window (of the restaurant)...

That works too. It won't make any difference to the customer though because we'd have to hold our phones out the window to tap in both cases.

I am sure they will. McDonalds will have little choices as chipped cards will be the standard in the USA by late next year. The outside readers will be common at ALL food drive-ins that accept credit cards.

I would never use apple pay in a drive through unless there was a reader already outside the window. Even then I probably wouldn't because I'd probably drop my phone.

Why is a person who spends 700+ dollars on a phone, purchasing food from McDonalds?

Got to give McD credit though, their burgers seem to have inspired the latest iPhone 6 design. Especially in regards to ratio of bun to meat, in Apples screen to bezel ratio (along with the apparent use of curves and similar profit margins).

Ah, okay. Here every one I've seen in publix stores here seem to be an older version of the verifone mx850. I'll double check but I do t think they even support chip. (I knew the 5/5s was a non-starter, it was just the Publix mention that drew my interest)

Yep, I am familiar with the 915 and 925. Sounds like Publix is rolling out new terminals and they haven't yet hit any of the stores I've been in here.
