ok so answer me this. if i was to attempt to copy my mac hd to an externally attached computer using the exact config that you have in that screenshot - would it allow me to do so? you have booted from the drive that you want to copy to the external. i thought you couldnt completely copy everything from a drive that was booted, is my question.

I don't see why not... but I haven't tried that one yet. I heard you can though. I personally use Carbon Copy Cloner, it's easy and simple.

i thought it wouldnt have worked because of the basic rules of file preservation/permissions. i might try it later though to see what happens.
 
Wow, I've learned so much about Hard Drives and etc in this thread alone! Thanks for all the help, It's really much appreciated.

I think I'm leaning more towards a WD 320GB or 500GB HDD. Is there any cheap enclosures anyone knows of to use for this process, just to get the job done?

I was looking at this one http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/USB2/OWC_Express from OWC but I don't know if there is something "better" or something "cheaper" that does the same exact thing.
