My card reader won't appear in Aperture

My new card reader (Lexzar USB 3.0) reads photos that only appear in iPhotos. How can I bring up the photos in Aperture so that I can import them?
 
Do you have Aperture up and running prior to inserting your card into the reader? My system seems to need that workflow ... then I just kill iPhoto if not using it and continue with Aperture.
