Hi guys, am deciding between getting my brother an

iMac 2010 27"
2.8Ghz i5
5750 1gb

or a

iMac 2012 21.5" (Super Slim)
2.7Ghz i5
640m 512mb

Benchmarks, age and screen technology, 21.5" wins by almost 2 years.

Screen size is the biggest selling point of the 27" here.

What would you guys recommend?
Thank you so much!

EDIT: this is incorrect. See next post for better informed facts.

If I remember correctly, the 2010 model has a Core 2 Duo processor. That's getting a bit long in the tooth now. I'd advise against that one.

If it where me I would rather have the 27" simply because of the screen size. Do you know if your brother has a preference in screen size?

The iMac "Core i5" 2.8 27-Inch Aluminum (Mid-2010) is powered by aQuad Core 2.8 GHz Intel "Core i5" I5-760 (Lynnfield) processor.
IIRC, first Generation i5 chips don't accelerate video compression, which means that they can't use the airplay feature, among other things. On the other hand, the older machine might have the better video card.

Also-- the newer machine has thunderbolt and usb3. Soldered RAM though,

I'd go with the newer model, i.e., 2012 model. I think it provides too many benefits over the 2010 model, even though you're getting a larger display.

yea so i went with the 3.3 i5 2015 retina 5k imac lol gg. thanks for the tips though everyone :D
Wow, that's quite a step up. You went from choosing between a 2010 or a 2012 iMac to a full blown 5k iMac. That will be a great present for your brother.

You are a very nice brother :D And I hope you will enjoy your new machine. Merry Christmas :)
