My computer keeps randomly freezing.

And it's making me nervous. I intend to use it as somewhat of a recording studio, and even a few minutes makes a difference, not to mention my tendency to work for an hour or so without saving... I get a horrible feeling that I'm going to experience some intense frustration and maybe even a little crying. And as a musician, I have enough of that already.

I can't really say why it's happening. At first I thought it was overheating, but it froze multiple times today in the range of 45-60 degrees. It just doesn't seem right to me. It's all updated and everything...
 
Is it giving anything away in the crash logs? You can find 'em in Console, in the Utilities folder. Also, what sort of third party hardware and software do you have? 🙂
 
are you using parallels?? do the freezes slow the computer down, but still responds eventually? or does it compeltely freeze and nothing works? are u able to try to force quit and see the route of the problem or something... it could be faulty ram, or maybe hdd, but probably not the latter
 
My computer did the exact same thing. i found out that it was a loose connection to my Hard drive. Don't know if this is the same problem since my computer is a Desktop machine... But if its a Macbook, try checking the hard drive.
 
Don't forget RAM. Faulty RAM can also be a culprit. After I upgraded the RAM in my mini, it began crashing about once a day. It turns out that the new RAM ran too hot for the limited cooling ability of the mini. I exchanged it for a different brand with the same specs and now everything is fine. Definitely check the crash logs, though, it's the best way to get an idea of where to look first.
 
I hope everything is backed up. Seemingly random hard freezes on my computers have always been due to dying boot drives.
 
It's actually been pretty good lately... it seems to happen when I'm running SoulSeeX, the SoulSeek client for OS X. I haven't done so in a while, but I'm firing it back up today... we'll see how it goes.

It's a new MBP, got it about a month ago, so I don't think it's the memory. I was thinking about taking it into the Apple store, but I can't help but think that the presence of P2P software on it would make them, well, frown a bit...

My new MBP kept freezing on me too. So I took it into an apple store, and they said they think it's a logic board problem. Do you have access to an apple store?
 
When it happens again, post the crash log and we might be able to tell you id SoulSeeX is the cause of the panics.
 
Well, it just happened again. I'm pretty sure I was running SSX but I was reading a webcomic for a while so I can't be sure what was running at the time. iTunes was, I know... is this the log you're talking about?:

Any particular reason you haven't updated to 10.4.10? I would think this is a MBP SR, and there could be a few fixes in the new OS update.

Actually, I am. Now that I looks more closely, this log appears to be from June 16... does OS X generate logs when the computer just freezes, or does it have to shut itself down, so to speak? Whenever it happens I shut the computer off myself via the power button, and when I start it up again it doesn't mention the freeze.

My guess is bad ram.

Like due to bad ram an instruction in memory got corrupted, and when your computer tried to execute it, wham!
 
please let us know what is determined at the apple store, I have begun encountering a couple odd freezing issues and would like to try and stay on top of this problem.

this kept happening to my macbook now it wont turn on all together, going in for repair soon
 
Oh god. It happened again, two hours of work, poof, gone. I am so mad at myself for not saving it; it just slipped my mind, even though I knew there was a problem... and now I feel like bashing my head against a wall >_<
 
Hard Drive GONE!

OK...so I was having the same problems with my MacBook freezing. I kept restarting ti and not worrying about it until it decided to not work anymore. Now ti starts up witha bright white screen and a while later I get the flashing " ? " folder. I took it to an Apple store and had tests run on it. The hard drive is dead. To any of you that are experiencing your mac freezing at all I recommend bringing it in asap. I lost all the stuff I had on my hard drive. Also...back everything up. I learned that hard way.🙁

do you have an apple store near you? Have you contacted Apple at all yet?
 
i just got my machine back from apple. They replaced the logic board, and it's still freaking freezing!! It's pissing me off. I did upgrade the memory, so i'm going to put in the old stuff and see if it still happens.
 
I took it in, unaware that I should have made an appointment, and a guy at the Genius Bar had me repair my disk permissions real quick, and said if it kept freezing to make an appointment. Well, it froze once more later that day, but it hasn't happened since then... I'm keeping my eye on it.
 
Mine also freezes, and it's also started happening to my year-old CD iMac - must be an issue with 10.4.10. I hope they iron it out soon.
