Wow. Just wow.

OP, you did exactly the right thing and were not in the wrong. If you set up in their campsite that's obviously not Ok, but taking the one next to them, especially when there are no others, is not a problem. And even if it were, the other guys were the ones completely out of line with their reaction.

The OP alluded that it was the same campsite as all the other ones were taken. He does state that this group may have tried to take two but then again as long as there is a tent per campsite, there is nothing wrong with it. For all we know, they were friends that went on 2 distinct camping trips but staying at same campgrounds and wanted to hang out a bit one night. We don't know

No, he did not do the right thing initially. He did the right thing after conflict arose. It was not right to set up camp at a site that was already established by someone else however

I mean really, why didn't he share the camp with people that he said were cool with it than risking setting up with others and not seeing if it were ok?
Yes, but there was no other campsites. they were all taken with even more people and none of them had a problem sharing with whoever was there.

Gotta agree about the etiquette thing... people need a little space.

People partying normally don't mind sharing if they think you're going to contribute to their good times.

What I don't get is why the kids just didn't bust out their stash and share it with the other group.

And please, let's not pretend that the kids didn't have their own stash.

No need to pretend. Not everyone has a "stash."

A couple of years ago, my brother and i were camping around in Florida. We were heading for Orlando, driving up north on the west coast. We were having a good time, not rushing anything, stopping now and then if we spotted something interesting. Because of this relaxed behaviour we didn't make it that day to the campsite we picked in our planning, so we found a campsite some hours driving from Orlando (i can't remember the place as it would make it easier to find the newsitem that would follow...).

That night, (we arrived kinda late) we were doing the dishes and we heard some lady's talk about something horrible happened involving some shooting. I didn't pay that much attention to it, as you know, it's the United States. People have guns overthere :D

The next day we arrive at the chosen campsite, and it was completely shut of by the police and parkrangers. The parkranger walks up to our car and says that some incident happenend and all was fine now. The 'incident' was a young man stealing the AK-47 from his dad, walking up to the campsite and randomly killed two people camping the night before. The night that we were supposed to stay there, but dind't make it... He walked away slowly, and wasn't really bothered by being arrested so the Parkranger told us.

We needed a place to sleep, so we stayed...

At the back of the campsite there where some homeless people building some camp, as i guess it was the only thing they could afford, house-wise. One man made some comment about my camera beiing expensive and that he had never seen something like that before.

That night about 03:00am my brother asked me if i was asleep... i wasn't, images of us being sprayed with bullets and eaten by homeless people wasn't really comforting.

We got up, threw the tent almost the way it was set up in the back of the car, sleepingbags still in it and took of...

(if i can find the newsitem, i'll edit this post)

***as i found the news-articles, it looks like my memory messed up some details, see below.)

I assume you mean in Pennsylvania. Having lived in the region for too many years now, I'm firmly of the opinion that the overwhelming majority of (native) Pennsylvanians are complete douchebags. You were in a no-win situation, and were right to call authorities to secure your getting out safely.

Combine poor behavior with alcohol ( no doubt in play in the other guys) and you get a bad evening. You reacted right and stayed safe.

This.

Wow that's pretty terrifying! Lucky escape eh. And absolutely dreadful about the unfortunate two campers who happened to be there that night!

Yes, it was the Pennsylvania side of the river and I have the same opinion about the state and try and avoid going there as much as possible. I live in NJ thankfully.

ahh man thats crazy, i hate having nights ruined by stuff like this :( Especially when it plays on your mind afterwards about what could've happened. Just be glad your same and nothing worse happened. I've had some bad camping trips too, including tents getting slashed and youths coming down picking fights with people.

You reacted the right way and i'm glad your alright man! Keep us posted on what happens :)

Also, drugs and alcohol = their behavior. Simple.

They set up on the site next to where the other group was already set up, not on the same site. The group returned and wanted both sites.

Thanks. I was going to comment because I was a little offended by that post. I'm 32 and have never smoked anything, illegal or otherwise. If any of my friends ever brought a "stash" with us when we went camping, I sure never knew about it.

Thanks, we don't do that kind of thing.
