Right now I have the 2012 MBA/128SSD/8 RAM 13"

I want to upgrade the SSD and that would cost me $300+

I also like the retina....

So should I sell the MBA and buy the retina or just upgrade the SSD?

Which would cost me more/save me more money and how much?

I think the MacBook Pro is very much worth it. If you need a bigger hard drive and you have $300 to spend on a hard drive just invest $300 into a MBP I dont know though if it would cost you lees to get the MBP it would probably cost more to go that route. You can always get the non retina MBP 🙂 nothing wrong with those.

I would recommend you hold off for now. The new MBPs are just around the corner. Personally, I wouldn't advise you to upgrade your internal Air SSD. It's almost a waste since you can't use your older SSD for anything (nobody wants a 128GB external drive). Besides, the prices are way too high as is. However, if your storage needs are urgent and can't be fulfilled with an external HDD, go for an rMBP (though try to push it till the end of the month).
