The ability to not only make calls at work, but keep the calls from dropping as well, is his main priority. Based on that criteria a zero is accurate, well maybe it should get a 10%.

He is not hiding this criteria and he is not claiming that other people may be happy with ATT.

Exactly. I'm kinda surprised people are getting so worked up about this. So the guy found a solution that works for him. He's not bashing the iPhone; he's bashing the network which, for him, is grossly inadequate. It's not like he said Steve Jobs's mom trolls the wharf district or anything. ;)

Its akin to not keeping the iPhone if you need 3G in an area that doesn't have 3G.

I think the OP's 'experience' is very useful. In fact, it's exactly this sort of information that I look for when visiting forums like this - especially before committing to something like an iPhone.

I do find it interesting how people jump all over one another when posting opinions- be it their review or personal experience. Live and let live...

I'm lucky to reside in a place that generally has very good 3G reception. I've had a Touch since its launch and the only reason I got an phone was so I could access email and the web my wifi network - I do find the camera useful as well. I rarely use the phone because I have a company provided blackberry.

I would find it incredibly frustrating if I had no network access for most of the day and/or could not make phone calls unless outside. I'd surely be looking for an alternative - the Droid finally appears to be the first real contender.

OP- I believe there is a keyboard-less version of the Droid coming out soon- sounds like this may be something you're interested in given your preference for the virtual kb.

Why do we think it's a review? Because it is. Period. A report card is a review too. You don't need to defend the fact it's your experience. We know that. It's YOUR review - not others.

I won't speak for others - but the points I raised are valid. I simply refuse to believe that ATT has a ZERO implying you have never been able to connect to their network for data or voice EVER and Verizon has NO room for improvement.

If you want to go with the teacher/report card analogy - you'd be brough before the board of education for your grading practices. Just sayin'

Come to Manhattan try to make a couple of calls then we'll talk

Right but the iPhone is not only available in Manhattan. It is available in 80+ countries around the world where users get excellent reception. The world does not revolve around Manhattan.

Unfortunately I have to go to Manhattan, NYC quite often, it's impossible to make calls. You have full bars yet unable to call forget browsing it's showing 3G yet works slower then 2G, times out all the time, GPS can't tell the location properly, always at least a half a block away. And I've used a 3G and 3GS and all firmware versions.

I was merely pointing the fact of OP's 0 for ATT I wouldn't give it more then 10% if I lived in NYC, the cellphone traffic is so congested that it's just impossible to own ATT

So it's: if you live in Manhattan - buy Droid, anywhere else buy iPhone. We clearly need five posts by ikaka to explain that.

:) yup clearly people couldn't understand OPs point of view in the first 2.5 pages, so maybe my 5 posts will come through

And jesus iPhone fan boys chill it: "you should have gotten and ipod touch then" WTF? Maybe you should stop praying to Steve in the mornings!

You seem a little off here, and let's be clear: I own an iPhone, but I'm not addicted and am rather impartial. However, the OP preferred everything but the network, so getting an iPod touch would seem like a logical choice for the OP to have access to apps, etc.

Agreed. The iPhone didn't work for the OP so he got a phone that did. Nothing wrong with that.

You got a point there, but he probably needed the phone, not a player, outside the work place where he gave ATT a 0

Let's not make assumptions. I'll go back to worshiping Steve Jobs or being logical. Maybe you shouldn't throw around insults and "WTFs" as much next time.

But c'mon WTF? lol Worshiping wasn't directed at you though, myself I also own an iPhone but I am open to other platforms and devices like Androids and what not. Just some of the people on these forum are so closed minded and addicted to iPhone and that's the best thing that happened to them and put comments like: "I'm so glad to be a part of this community, and Apple" (dude.. it's a phone) that I really do imagine then rolling a carpet turning in the direction of the Apple headquarters and pray in the morning.

You've been around for a while to know what I am talking about...

Yes. They tell me that they have no control over what happens in buildings. I've even talked to the cellular directors of the hospital...turns out there are two antennas on the top of the building that ALL other carriers pay for access to...except AT&T. I asked if they have any plans to gain access to that antennae and he said "no" :(

So looks like your office installed repeaters for other cell companies but did not install repeaters for AT&T. Someone at the IT department is anti-apple / anti-AT&T.

Nope, I really have no idea what you're talking about.

Mainly the OP is making his decision on the cell service, AT&T or Verizon. Since Verizon is better for HIM, then he had to go with the Droid. Anyone else that has the same experience as HIM would do the same. For me, AT&T is great, so all his "review" does is tell the difference between the iPhone and Droid, allbeit in a very subjective sort of way.

I agree with the OP. Even in NYC my iPhone will not connect to data or even place calls or receive texts in so many places. I'm tempted to switch to the Droid, but the expense of doing so is prohibitive. Also, I'm hoping for a significant iPhone upgrade this summer which might solve some of the problems.

Droid ERIS and its already out.

The eris is not a droid without a keyboard; it's a rebranded Hero. It has that pitiful 528 mhz qualcomm cpu, no dedicated gpu, and android 1.5. It's actually a sleeker and more attractive phone than the droid, but it's nowhere close in specs.

That's absolutely the opposite of my experience. I get the best service in or near the borough of Manhattan on all carriers.

That may be, but I prefer the Eris over the Droid.

Around where I am vzw ≈ AT&T service wise, but in my house, AT&T wins by far. At school, AT&T wins by a little, and in between is about even, some places vzw is better, some AT&T

0/100 for ATT and 100/100 for Verizon? See the reason people have a problem with your "experience" of the iphone is that you have used both spectrums of your grading scale. 0/100 seems to imply that you have never had service, or if you did, it was like 1 bar and very limited 3g at all places. 100/100 would imply that you always have max bars (which you have already stated you don't) and maximum data speeds everywhere.

If you would have been more realistic, lets say giving ATT a 25/100 which means to me, very poor service, with lots of dropped calls and very spotty 3G service.... and Verizon a 90/100, which would mean 4 out of 5 bars most of the time, nearly no dropped calls and almost advertised data speeds... then I think people would have agree'd for the most part. Even this is extreme, because I would argue that one wouldn't pay 60 bucks a month for the last 2.5 years for that kind of service. I think giving ATT a 50/100 (still a failing grade) would be realistic. It would essentially mean that ATT is keeping half of there "promise" which seems about right.

But in the end... what that does is gives the iphone a 73 (using 25/100) rating and the droid a 80 rating, and it wouldn't have enough of a difference to have that shock value you are looking for. Using 50/100 would force the mods to lock this thread.

I can't believe you rated AT&T's network 0/100... A bit harsh there don't you think? It's not like you don't get service at all... At least I hope it's not like that.

You constructed a well-formatted post only to ruin it's credibility with the network scores.

An iPod Touch get a 0 of 100 for cell service. If you saw a bar at a window give it a 5 of 100. If you can make calls on the way home, bump it to 25 of 100.

Verizon is far from 100 of 100. LMAO. Google Verizon Deadzones.

Thank you for sharing your experience anyway.
