Update: iOS 14.4.2 works flawlessly on my iPhone 8 with Intel modem, as it does the connectivity on the device and switching between cellular and wifi works properly. No issues whatsoever, very happy with the update. For a more in depth review, please scroll down to read the comment #12, thank you.

Original Post: Hello. I’ve been reading closely about the development of iOS 14.5, beta after beta, and it seems there is a consensus about the Celular and WiFi disconnections (iPhone), especially when switching between them. Right now, I need to have my phone operative, because I’m waiting for important calls. And our phone should be reliable.

I’m on iOS 13.7 and my iPhone 8 works flawlessly. However, I want to update, for security and features. But I am not sure if all this problems people is having with celular and WiFi connectivity, are affecting people on iOS 14.4.2, which is the current version.

I just want to know if all of this connectivity issues that are plaguing iOS 14.5 are still present on 14.4.2 because my plan is to update to 14.4.2 and stay there until iOS 14.5.1 or 14.6 fixes them.

Thank you.

No issues with that on my 11 Promax or 12 Promax on 14.4.1, 14.4.2 or the 14.5 Betas.

Well, I asked because I read that switching between WiFi and Celular was tricky on 14.5 betas, and I wasn’t sure those issues were happening on 14.4.2 as well, which is the version I am planning to jump to. Oh and by the way, mine has an Intel modem.

Many thanks

I switch between WiFi and cellular all the time on my 12 Pro Max without issue. I am on 14.4.2

Ok guys, many thanks to everyone. I really appreciate it.

As you can see, I only update when the operating system is stable enough, specially on a system that cannot be downgraded. I waited until 13.7 to update from iOS 12, and this year I was specially eager to update all my devices, because the security patches and the features on iOS 14, which are great.

I updated the iPads first, because those are less critical, but I need a reliable iPhone.
See you on the other side!

Honestly I’ve never had a problem updating right away. It’s too risky from a security perspective to remain on an old iOS version that long.

Yeah but from my experience, early versions of iOS are usually pretty buggy. I am not talking about being more than a year on an old iOS version, but I wait until I see it is reliable enough. iOS 13 was pretty problematic and that’s why I waited so long. This year, iOS 14 seems more polished but still, I wanted to be sure that it was reliable, stable, and bug-free enough to jump in.

If Apple allowed us to downgrade, at least to the previous major release, we wouldn’t have so much fear to update our phones and systems, and risk having problems with it. Other solution could be allowing us to download security updates while staying on older versions, just like on macOS. But it seems that change is finally not coming with iOS 14.5

Anyways I appreciate your input, and just to be clear, security is one of the reasons why I am finally updating. It’s been several security patches already, and the one from 14.4.2 seemed serious enough.

I was about to open a new thread, but I will recycle this one.

This is an update to help those who are still on iOS 13 and deciding whether or not to update, afraid of issues and bugs and battery drain, It refers to an iPhone 8 with Intel modem, but I guess the experience would be similar on an iPhone 7 or an iPhone X

iOS 14.4.2 is an awesome version. I don’t know about the previous ones because this is a clean install, but at this point I’m very happy to have updated. Aside from the translate app, that is broken when you select the off-line dictionaries, everything else works flawlessly!

Connectivity in particular was one of my main concerns, as you can read on my first post. Connectivity works flawlessly. Wifi with good sensitivity, and it switches instantly to my carrier’s (Movistar/O2) 4G network, as soon as I abandon my house.

Another concern was battery life, as always. Well, I’m very happy in this regard as well. I’ve been using the phone for 2,5 hours and it has drained the battery from the 100% to 65%, which means I will keep having the same 6 hours (give or take) I used to have with iOS 13. Zero overheating, just during the install and setup, after 30 minutes of the initial setup the phone has been fresh to the touch.

The new features are also pretty awesome and the keyboard feels responsive and the system is snappy. So, if you aren’t sure whether to update or not, definitely you should update. Keep in mind the update window, as iOS 14.5 is coming next week, and people are reporting several bugs and issues, and some report battery drain. I chose to update to this more stable version, and miss the new upcoming transparency features regarding app tracking, but that is up to you.

Thanks for the helpful info.

Updated to iOS 14.4.2 (from iOS 13.5) and seems to work OK.
