My External Hard Drive In Disk Utility Is Grayed Out

i am available today, it wont be for sometime though. probably not for another 4 or 5hrs. is that ok?
if its finished without any hiccups then i think thats a good sign, just leave it open until i can assist

I'm having this same problem, coincidentally with my girlfriends macbook in brooklyn :\
She dropped her computer while it was attempting to go into sleep mode and the read/write heads mustve hit the surface of the drive because it would no longer boot.
Long story short i put a different drive into her computer and installed snow leopard, but all of her old files are still on the external.
At first the old drive (now in a USB external enclosure) would mount and i could browse the files in finder, but i got errors when trying to move files. So i ran a disk repair in disk utility, which after 30min or so, failed to finish. After which the drive no longer mounts to desktop when plugged in, but does show up in Disk Util as grayed out, and when i try to mount it, it wont.
If you guys have any luck or any pointers on data recovery software please let me know.
I am currently lucturing her on the importance of back ups.
