"How to maximise your MacRumors troubleshooting experience" created by mad jew in 2006. Text is really simple, but nevertheless, I had the same issues once and could remedy it via SMC reset. In case of search engine failure: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

The firewire port might not be providing enough power to the device. Do you have the option of adding a power source (ac adapter)?
