It's not. Please explain what is going on exactly.

Just based on the thread title...

-Does it appear in Disk utility?
-Does it appear on another Mac?
-Does it have a USB interface you could try connecting it with?

I agree with miles01110 on the "not easy to follow" part. "How to maximise your MacRumors troubleshooting experience" created by mad jew in 2006.

Text is really simple, but nevertheless, I had the same issues once and could remedy it via SMC reset.

I only own one mac
and it always works via USB but i need it to work for firewire

The firewire port might not be providing enough power to the device. Do you have the option of adding a power source (ac adapter)?

I reset the SMC and the startup went slower so I think it worked.
And the enclosure does have its own power supply.
however it still wont work
