Very interesting thread. I've somewhat gone off my Apple Watch, I'm not sure if it ever was the right thing for me in the first place. I've no desire to send messages from my wrist, to make phone calls from my wrist and getting notifications from everything started to become really annoying, then there was having to charge it all the time. I use it now for fitness only, so its great for tracking my runs, walks and lifting sessions, after that I stick it on the charger until the next day, I use it mainly as a fitness tool only and it does that ever so well. Rest of the time I have my tough solar G-Shock, it tells the time, never needs a new battery, receives atomic time every night, basically never needs to be mothered.

Presumably this complication shows steps (“2305”). Does it update in real time?
I don't know which app that is -- Apple doesn't have a native complication that shows steps. I have tried a few apps that shows steps in complications, and my experience is it varies. Most of the time they update automatically, but sometimes I find I have to open the app to get the latest numbers.

Here’s some more data: I’m younger than OP and not overwhelmingly enamoured with my Apple Watch, certainly not for the price compared to my MacBook Air.

Agreed: I bought a fancy new $1200 CAD Garmin Epix last week (the new top of the line AMOLED version) really just to try it out...I do a ton of fitness stuff and Garmin has always been my fitness watch of choice. That said over the years I've had several AW's after cobbling together a sync solution to get workouts back to Garmin Connect via RunGap, but the watches never stuck and I always dumped them and went back to my Fenix. The Epix on the other hand (and somewhat surprisingly) just got returned too, the price tag is just too much to swallow when you consider you can buy a brand new Garmin Fenix 6 Pro AND and an AW7 for LESS than the f-in Epix! Or, a brand new Macbook Air M1 for the SAME price as a f-in Epix! So with that sobering fact in mind I just grabbed yet another AW7 since I now look at them like a bargain hahaha!

Time will tell if it sticks around past 14 days, I doubt it but I'm now trying to look at it as an alternative fitness tool to my Fenix 5, not a replacement for it...i.e. it has most of the AMOLED & Mapping bells and whistles of the Epix at less than half the price, and what it doesn't have the old Fenix 5 does.

Cheers

Very interesting thread. I’m 63 and always found traditional “time only” watches a bit useless for the one key function they provided. But I’m sure that is contrary to most people. Then I got a Garmin Instinct about a year ago as my first watch of any kind in the last 25 years. I absolutely loved the fitness tracking and health monitoring. Tracked about 800 miles of road biking 100 miles of swimming (l like to swim!) and at least 150 miles worth of wing foiling (there’s one you hear every day).

Just got a 13 Pro Max and thought I would try out my first AW (SE 44mm LTE) at the same time to go with it. So far so good. Miss the Garmin battery life and I miss Garmin Connect but my AW has its obvious benefits.

I was never much for nostalgia. Heck I listen music from people who are my kids age, and my favorite sport (see avatar) didn’t even exist 4 years ago!
Your avatars head looks like a dogs head silhouette. ?

If Apple iPhone did not have such a low vibration for sound I would not be using a Apple Watch.

Guessing it is their master plan.

I don't know if yuóu already use it or not, but I really recommend the WorkOutDooors app fro your AW. Its an awesome app, the only app I actually think is worth buying. Its less than $10. One off payment, no subscription. Tons of information about your workouts, syncs to Strava etc.
The developer is active on this forum and quick to respond too. If it wasn't for this app, I would not use my AW much at all. Prefer my automatic watches in general

Yes I have and love WOD, like you it's basically the main reason I still have an Apple watch, I too wear my mechanical watches most of the time ;)
