I have been tossing this topic around in my mind for some time now. Thanks to this thread, it led me to make the decision that the 17-40 will be my first L lens within the next few months-need to see year end financal numbers and tax responsibilities and what if anything is leftover! I figure that within 2-3 years I will bite the bullet and get a FF camera and some more lenses. Thanks to everyone's imput to the OP. It's helped me make my decision as well.:)

Not to put you on the spot Zoreke, but w/o pictures this thread.....is just text!!

Post some picts in this thread you've taken with your new lens!!!

You are right! buyt I haven't got a lot of time to try my new lens other than boring product shots for work... I found this from my lst trip to SF some weeks ago and I thought it was cool!

I have both of those lenses, and they are very comparable on an APS-C body. Both very sharp and contrasty with great color rendition, and CA is easily corrected with either lens. The similarities kind of stop there, though. The 17-55 is a much more versatile lens, and the 17-40 is better built and is weather sealed.

I generally use the 17-55 on my 7D, but if I'm shooting in inclement weather, I'll opt for the 17-40 instead. Otherwise, the 17-40 gets most of its use on my 5D Mark II, where it's a whole other kind of lens. Besides being an UWA lens on the full-frame camera, it gets its weak spots exposed: corners are absolute junk (though, to be fair, that's typical of UWA lenses).

70-200 f/4L IS is probably the best bang-for-your-buck you can possibly get today.

Never used the 17-40, but from what I have seen and read it seems to be up there too. Better image quality in many areas compared to the 16-35 f/2.8 even.

post more pics!

Pardon the off-topic bit here, I've the 70-200 f4 IS, and absolutely love it - my first Canon L lens. Also have the Tokina 116 (11-16) AT-X [their "L" series], and will be acquiring the Canon EF-S 17-55 in the next week or so. All go on my Canon 50D [along with the two kit lenses: 55-250 and 28-135].

BTW, I've not used, but have read / heard that the 17-40 is indeed excellent, but really shines best on a full-frame, more so than a crop sensor body... Phrasikleia, do you have that experience? One thing I particularly like more about the 17-55 is the faster aperture. Neg is the concerns re: dust and potential IS issues [at least maybe only on older units?].

Nevertheless - congrats Zoreke! :)

FYI-type of rumor: I stumbled across this by accident today on canonrumors.com's home page, several articles down:

A wide angle f/4L with IS is “definitely coming”.

I believe they may be talking about the 17-40L f/4 adding IS and coming out with the new camera releases in March 2011. So I will probably wait until then and see if this rumor is garbage or real.
