"Effect"? That doesn't sound right. It should still be "effective", I would think.

Yeah, don't ask the native English speaker to proof anything.

:D

(Have the Swede do it, for sure.) :)

Here's what may be the final copies. After proof-reading of course. ;)

Lose the references and put "Professional references avilable on request" so you keep it to one page.

I'll work on the rest of the res.

That's not an unreasonable idea, but I was under the impression that is was bad to put references available upon request....

Nah, not in my experience. They like your resume, they will ask for references.

You seem to know what you're talking about. I'll trust ya. ;)

Consider it gone.

One note: I would enjoy sending this to my prospective employer by this time tomorrow.

This is just a personal thing for me, but I honestly think thinks look fine without being underlined. By the headings being bolded they are already emphasised. But, that's just me.

Concerning the references, I was taught that you don't even need the line "references are available..." If they want references, they will ask for them. Just be sure to have them ready and tell your references when you hand out their names as a heads-up.

Something else to remember - a resume is never finished. I have six or so different versions of my resume depending on what field I am applying for. (I just made a career change.) My computer programmer resume is quite a bit different from the horticulture, educator, or scientist resume.

The last thing I can tell you is this (I am not accusing you of anything. I haven't even looked at your file.) - Be totally honest!!! You might be tempted to push the truth. DON'T. You never know in who's hands that piece of paper is going to end up...

Good idea.

Taking your advice I took out the part about making InDesign workflows. I helped by giving fellow staffers tips on problems but I didn't really make so called "workflows". If they asked exactly what I had done, I would be at a loss for words.

Below is my cover letter. My dad said it was much too long.

How is this?

To Whom It May Concern:

I have been gifted with the opportunity of working in the Yearbook department of my High School for two years. I have learned a great deal during that time and I feel my skills I have gained would best be put to use in newspaper productions. Please consider me for your opening the Production Department.

I joined the Yearbook staff my junior year in high school not only because I love to work with computers, but for my passion and dedication to writing.

I believe that my past experiences would serve me well in a position with your paper, the Herald and News. I have read the paper since the fall and I believe it to be a most respectful paper. To be frank, I am impressed. I would be honored to serve under the paper as a production technician and computer tech.

I am moving to Oregon and will be arriving June 15th. I will be available to work any and all times after that day. Please email me at alexwait@alexwait.com or call me at (913) 886 – 2828 to discuss further how I might serve your publication.

Sincerely,

Alex Wait

I am writing to you concerning the opening in the Production Department at The Herald & News. The past two years I have had the good fortune to work at my high school's yearbook department [title of yearbook]. I joined the [title of yearbook] staff my junior year because I love to work with computers and I have a passionate dedication to writing. While there I learned a great deal and feel the skills I gained would be of considerable use in newspaper productions.

I feel my experiences would serve me well at The Herald and News. I have read the paper since the fall and it is quality journalism. To be frank, I am impressed. I would be honored to serve the paper as a production technician and computer tech. (side note - are two different available positions or one?)

I am moving to Oregon on June 15th and will be available to work any and all times from that date. Please email me at alexwait@alexwait.com or call me at (913) 886 – 2828 to further discuss how I might serve your publication.

Thank you for your consideration.

Enclosure: Resumé

I touched it up a bit.

Do you think the fact that I won't be able to work until the 16th or so will hinder me too much?

Submitted the resumé the date of the last post....

It's been two weeks. I haven't got a call from them yet. I called today to confirm that they did in fact get my resumé and I had to leave a message on the Production Department's voicemail.

I'm going to call again tomorrow if I don't hear anything by then.
