Quick update on the story.

I gave my friend the address and he drove by in his patrol car just to verify if it was the right guy.

It was.

Most normal guys can see a car and recognize its make and model from a mile away. Cops, in addition to having this ability, are trained further to notice these things and he said there wasn't a doubt in his mind that that was the same vehicle he saw the scammer in yesterday.

Call me crazy but wouldn't the license plates also tell you if that was the same car and I don't think you need to be a cop to notice that!

He has NO doubt you guys! None at all. He can notice a car and know 100% that it's the "scammer's" car...... just can't tell a fake i from a real i  Yes I know they did the ol, switch-a-roo on him but ffs, why would he just keep it in the box, put the lid on, hand over large amount of $$ and be on his way? Like I said before, I feel sorry for the community he is supposed to be protecting.

As a matter of fact, have your friend come to explain himself.....better yet, have him join good ol MR and let HIM tell his story. I'd love to hear it from the coppers "mouth".

Problem is, how will he show proof that he was scammed unless the poster did not delete the ad yet and he printed out the webpage. Even though he is a cop, the judge will definitely have to side with the party with evidence. So, he can't accuse them without proof.

He obviously did not get the license plate number because he didn't think this would happen.

I won't be doing that because he's a cop himself and his cop friends know and I don't know if you know this but police officers are deemed "credible persons" by the court, meaning they take their word as evidence. That's one of the reasons why they can simply say you ran the stop sign and have no other evidence. He's going to drive by in his police car at 5AM tomorrow just to be sure that's him.

That seriously sucks, and one skilled scammer. What if your buddy had the money in hand while looking at the legit iPhone? The scammer probably would have still slipped in the fake somehow.

i just have one problem with the story.

You said your friend went back to the car (possibly to get money). Now if I'm a scammer i wouldn't know that he's gonna go back to car so then i will switch the phone. A scammer wont rely on such uncertainty. I mean what would happen if your friend or any other buyer wouldnt leave the scammer alone? The scammer would give up the real phone?

it just doesnt add up, and i have no reason to doubt you either but im just thinking rationally

My guess is the scammer would have created some reason to go back out to the car. "Oh yeah, I forgot the charge cable. Its in the car, I'll be right back."

I'll make this as short and concise as I can.

There was an ad on CraigsList for an unlocked/jbed iPhone 3GS 32GB for $400 lightly used with box, no scratches since he would not be getting the iPhone 4.

The seller and my friend then met up and he showed my friend the iPhone 3GS. He turned it on and everything was legit and perfect except for a scratch in the top right of the black plastic. My friend pointed this out and after about 30 seconds of negotiation the seller agreed to take $50 off the price.

My friend quickly went back to the car to retrieve the cash and then came back with the $350. The seller handed him the open box with the phone on top and the lid in the other hand. My friend only needed to look for half a second to see that there was a phone in the box before closing it up himself.

When he got home he took it out of the box and then he saw it. When he told me the story I knew right away he had gotten a Sci-phone, one of the Chinese imitation iPhones. And as you all know the front of the Sci-phone and 3GS look nearly identical at a moment's glance, plus my friend had no reason to suspect foul play.

I didn't post this story so you could make fun of my friend so you could boost your own self-confidence but just to warn you that scams out there take place.

Holy crap! People scam each other?!?

That's what I was thinking too. I also can't help but wonder what would have happened if my friend examined it once more after the scammer passed the box on.

Why don't people read?

Yeah I did read that, but this isn't a stop sign. This requires proof that the "scammer" did indeed scam you and you would need proof. What if this "scammer" listed a sciphone and the officer was just a complete idiot? This isn't traffic court, you need physical proof.

Yawn, you really should be careful what you say, or karma is going to bite you in the ass.

Any update on this? Just curious because I saw Katy, TX in the imageshack link and I live basically in Katy..

lets face it, nothing against your friend but everyone knows to be cautious when dealing with strangers through craigslist. Your friend portrayed very poor cop judgement and there is no justifying that by saying he didnt think it would happen, that is just more poor judgement.

Luckily you found the guy, but your friend is a cop, its embarrassing enough that he got scammed, but now you are going to go to small claims court and testify saying "I am a trained cop and this man easily deceived me"

Yeah, better not say a horrible cop is dangerous to the community.... wow I feel THAT karma hit already!

My phone has been on Craigslist for about a week. I have had 2 people call and wanted to see it. Never followed through. I have had 2 people txt me and they wanted to see it later that day. Never followed through. I have had 10 emails, all scammers. It's funny and it's mundane at the same time.

I also had someone offer me $200 for a 32GB 3GS in mint condition. I told him no and said $350. He said he could go to AT&T and get it for $200! I said yeah, with a 2 year contract. He sent an email after that, it made no sense.

So Craigslist for my area - is a joke right now. I am at a point I might as well keep it as a spare and if I sell it good, if not whatever. Will probably be better after the "RUSH" is over.

Not to get personal, but what area? I live in the Bay Area on the west coast in California. Sold mine within 24 hours of posting.

Same. I'm offering a one day old (apple replaecment) 32GB w/ original box and unused accessories + a bt headset + case + screen protector and will transfer original warranty to new buyer or 450; got one bite for 400 -_-. I guess if I get another bite i'll do it but won't include any of the extras.

It wasn't this bad last year when I sold my 3G. I had lots of offers. Sold it for $350 I think. Maybe $325.

My phone is literally mint. You could shrink wrap the box back up and you could never tell the difference. I really am not too bothered. Just wanted to sell it because I won't have a use for it when I get the iPhone 4. If I don't sell it, oh well. I will wait and try later.

I won't give it away. Not especially since it has the box, ear buds never used, charger never used and all the other goodies plus a new black incase slider.

People wanting these phones for cheap are a bit out of their minds. :p

I sold my white iPhone 3G (16GB) for $200 the other day. I'd have loved to get $250, but almost all of the offers I was getting were around that price, and eBay seems to concur, so it seems to be a fair market price.
