Thanks that worked. What if I also have a Catalina installation though?
Sorry, what about it? They don't share the same files, just download the newer version from the App Store in Catalina. The App Store won't give you an option to use an older version of the latest is compatible.

Edit: Oh, but, the newer iWork may save files in a slightly newer version that doesn't work with the older version on High Sierra, that's probably what you meant, and it is a problem. Well, you could use the High Sierra version everywhere, just download the older version from High Sierra and then copy that .app file to Catalina.

So say I currently have a purchas history of old Pages compatible with HS. If I download on Catalina with same Apple ID. Does it overwrite my purchase history so I couldn’t download a compatible version from HS again?

I guess I should get into the habit of saving xxx.app since incompatibility keeps happening.

I didn’t think too much about file format as my life doesn’t depend on any local “productivity” software or files.

Thanks adib. BTW.

No. If you are currently using an OS that is not compatible with the latest version of an app, the App Store's "Purchased" screen will always offer to install the last compatible version (unless Apple changes it some day).

You can even use this to get older versions of apps you've never downloaded before! I'm running Mavericks, but I have a copy of High Sierra installed in VMWare Fusion. A few weeks ago, I needed to install a copy of OneDrive on Mavericks. As you might expect, the latest version of OneDrive is very much not compatible with Mavericks.

So, I loaded up my High Sierra VM, went to the App Store in High Sierra, and downloaded OneDrive. This of course downloaded the latest version, which I can't use in Mavericks—but it also added OneDrive to my purchase history. Then, I shut down the Virtual Machine, went to the purchased tab in the Mavericks App Store, and clicked Install. The App Store offered to install the last compatible version, which I did, and now I'm happily using OneDrive! 😌

P.S. This also works on iOS.

Office 2000 was good one, first Microsoft Office I ever used. I tend to use Office 97 for Windows 9x/NT4/2k. I have Office 97 installed in addition to LibreOffice and Office 2016 on Windows 10 and it works. For Windows 3.1 I use Office 4.3. I use Office 98 for OS 9, but I might give 2001 a try someday. Office 2004 is pretty good. I prefer the pre-ribbon versions of Office. I hated using Office 2007. I'm more used to the ribbon interface nowadays, but I still don't like it. That's why I don't have Office 2008 installed. I have OpenXMLConverter installed too.

I will add something here.. Office 2001 I use and its the best MS OFFICE for the Mac in easy OS 9 ! I used it to make my resume, budget reports and mostly my G4 Titanium is my biggest driver for everyday things.

I bought a tangerine Clamshell awhile back and it came with Office 2001 installed. I've only used Word, but I like Office 2001 too. The most noticeable difference between Word 98 and 2001 to me, is that 2001 uses new icons and startup screens and it behaves more like Office X in that it asks you which kind of document you want to make instead of just taking you to a blank document like 98 does. I use Office 2001 on my Dual USB iBook nowadays.

Compared to the bloatware we have today and subscription office 360 ? I prefer older Office for the Mac compared to today's - today's is built like crap.
