I've never had this issue personally with any of my iDevices before, so I'm not really sure what's going on. Did a little googling and some people recommended doing a restore, which wouldn't be a problem. He only uses the iPad to surf the internet so he wouldn't be losing anything. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this though, and if there's anything else we could do?

edit: Forgot to mention that this happens like ten times or so and then it finally works for him.

If there is a chance it will work again, as it has in the past, perhaps back it up first. Obviously not necessary if browsing the net is truly all he does is browse the net.

Have you checked, buttons to make sure none of them are sticking, since the issue seems to randomly resolve itself, or has in the past?

I haven't seen the device yet since he just called me about it this morning. Might stop by after work and check it out though.

All he does is use it to browse the Internet, though if I backed it up would it maintain his search history or no?

If he uses iCloud it could save his safari bookmarks but not search history

Thread title makes me smile, not because your grandpa is having problems, more that he uses an iPad. The very thought of my grandad (as we call them here in the UK), who sadly passed 25 years ago, using an iPad is quite an amusing thought :). He was in the tank division in WW2, would have loved to show him an iPad, heh.

That is all.

Grandma used my old iPad 2 for Facebook (grandkids and great grandkids' photos mostly) and FaceTime. She passed away last year at 89. I find iOS devices are pretty simple and easy for non-techies to pick up.

Update: My Grandpa looked through his iPad for seniors book and seemed to have fixed the problem! Hopefully it doesn't occur again or I'll likely just restore it.

I'm glad! I'm sure your grandad was a great man. :)
