My iMac 27" i7 2.93 Ghz just came in!!

    Hi guys,

    I know there are many threads but I just wanted to make a post about getting my new iMac.

    I am going to pick it up from my parents place in a couple of hours and I just want to know the things I should keep a look out for when I boot it up for the first time.

    How do I know if my iMac has any problems such as yellow tint or the brightness hum? I haven't been following all the problems with the iMac but I would like to make sure I got a flawless machine.

    Any tips?

    Also this is my first mac purchase in 5 years since i bought my PowerMac. My brothers have gotten iMac's within the 5 years and within a year the HDD has always failed. Any suggestions on prolonging the HDD's life?

    I am so excited to open my iMac i just hope it doesn't have any of the problems that other forum posters have complained about.

    I'm curious about the model number of HDD you have.

    Go to "About This Mac" under the Apple Menu. Then click "More Info." Then click "Serial-ATA."

    Please post your model number in this thread.

    The best way I have found to check for yellow tint is to pull up an all white screen. You can easily change your desktop to all white in preferences. Then just look and see if the screen is uniform. There may be a little discoloration near the edges of the screen, that is pretty normal for LCD screens in this price range. As long as you don't have severe yellow tinting in the middle of the screen, then I would say you screen is pretty normal.

    As for prolonging the hard drive there really is no way to stop a hard drive from failing. Any hard drive with moving parts can break and at any time. Best advice is to get a good back up drive and save your work. The hard drive could last years or it could break on boot up. You never know.

    Mroogle and forum search are very useful for these kind of things. Just do a search for what to look for in new Mac.

    Not sure if you have a way, but I'd love to know how StarCraft II plays on this machine.

    For what it's worth, my 2TB HD is a Hitachi HDS722020ALA330.

    I can't ID the SSD manufacturer; it's simply listed as APPLE SSD TS256B.

    I know this question wasn't intended for me, but since I just got mine earlier today, I figured I'll post mine.

    For the 2TB HDD:

    I got some bad news bout my imac. It doesnt seem to have any yellow tinting and if it does I don't notice it.

    Also if there is any humming or whatever I don't hear it.

    My problem is on the bottom left corner of the screen seems to be a small crack in the glass or something. It is about 1/2 cm long. It is near the very bottom left. so it isn't really noticable but i wish my imac was flawless.

    I don't know if i should complain and get a replacement and then have more issues. If the background is white or light then you might notice it if you actually look at the bottom left. But when would I ever look at the bottom left?

    If i watch a movie it will probably be 2:35:1 so there would be black bars at the bottom and i wouldn't notice it. Also the dock is at the bottom but even then i don't really see it.

    What do you guys think? Could I go to an apple store and get it fixed under warranty? or would they have to give me a replacement?

    the imac is so nice. I wish it was perfect though.

    Anyone know if i can tell if its a crack in the glass or what it actually is? i can't really take picture with my phone. its hard to see it.

    Here are some pictures. However it is hard to really see it as the picture isnt that clear. But it looks clearer in person then the pics.

    Edit - I think i will keep it. The hassle of getting it repaired or exchanged will be a pain. I just installed windows 7 and i can't even see the crack because of the windows start logo.

    On Mac OS X i can barely see it. If i sit like 5 feet from it to watch a youtube vid or anything i can't even see it.

    My question is. do you think the crack will expand? I would hate for it to expand after my warranty expires.

    I didn't buy apple care but i plan on buying apple care a week before the year expires since my brothers have had HDD problems.

    I just hope the crack doesn't get bigger. I think there are two small dot (dead pixel) or a dot crack beside the smaller one but it is not distracting.

    Not worth the risk of waiting and seeing if it gets worse. I'd return it

    Hey, quick question: How's your hard drive coming along? I have the same one and mine's "so far so good". (knock on wood)

    Did you end up getting your iMac replaced?

    I say replace bc the more complaints that Apple gets, they'll either improve the packaging or scold UPS or FedEx. This may not directly help you but will probably help future iMac buyers get their iMacs with out harm.

    I personally think that it is a combo of Apples packaging and delivery treatment. I had friends that worked for UPS and FedEx and they have stories to tell. One employee's bad day or run in with their manager can = many tossed packages.

    You payed so much you deserve perfect. It's not a Dell. Demand perfection!

    my brother has the same computer and he's playing a lot of SCII. it's -fantastic-.


    OP: i'm sorry about the crack. definitely call them and get it replaced.

    i don't know why so many people getting Imac with cracked screen, is there a problem with packaging, i don't know any manufacture would ship knowingly bad product, i have read this issue in PCworld mag. a while ago, i am surprised it is still happening. Apple should have figure it by now.

    I would return it, An apple store should get your replacement, since you have custom made Imac, it might take longer, i am pretty sure Apple will take good care of you.

    It is hard to give a definite advise without seeing it, but if it is really a crack it may and probably will expand (thermal stress over and over again does it).
    If you like the computer otherwise you may ask Apple to just replace the glass. Should take 5 minutes and you could even ask to be present during the repair.

    My guess is the shipping. I had friends who worked at UPS and FedEx and all three have told me that the employees will kick and throw any boxes that say fragile or they know that contain expensive stuff just for the hell of it and management doesn't care. Its completely common.

    Well, they're costing UPS, FedEx, etc., lots of insurance claims. Maybe it's a conspiracy so that Apple can sell even more iMac's. :D

    Oh yea, and definitely replace! It kinda worked for me that I had to keep returning my iMac's. My FOURTH iMac is a 2010 model Core i7 for the price of a Core i3. :D And it's perfect! (Pound on wood!!)
