You are quite correct, of course a 2007 iMac can still be usable. I do kinda sorta get some of the people - when you pay a lot of money, you have some expectations, and UI lag is probably not what you expect from the most expensive iMac on offer. However, while I do *understand* these expectations, the *reactions* I do not understand. It's like buying a great, fast, beautiful (and expensive) car and finding out that the audio system inside is not quite what you would expect - and it's not replaceable. Sure, you can be disappointed with that aspect - but will you return the entire car (that is otherwise incredible), enraged - just because of the audio inside? It's like - "I didn't buy the car for driving, I bought it for listening to music".

And that's where your comment fits perfectly: claims that occasional lag makes the computer unusable are just wrong. I don't care what you do, and what your job is, if moving sliders in Lightroom at a slightly lower speed than you expected prevents you from working, then you're either overreacting, or are downright incapable.

So, thank you for your post, I agree completely.

When you look at how Apple has marketed their products over the years, one expects it to work as advertised. I see no issue in wanting expensive products to work as the manufacturer says it does. I could never criticize someone for that.

Often when there is a major hardware advance there is a lag, no pun intended, for the software to catch up. Many of the complaints about the 5K are software related. It seems unfair to blame the hardware for software, particularly when the software is likely to updated soon.

I agree, it's called false advertising - but what did Apple advertise about iMac 5K that iMac 5K doesn't do?

It's not false advertising if they say something like "It comes with an incredible display and the power to match it" (or something like that) and you subjectively think that is not the case.

If they claimed it comes with, say, 16Gb of RAM and sold it with just 8, now that would be false advertising.

So, please, tell me what did the manufacturer say the iMac Retina does that it doesn't?

As for "expectations" - well, they are highly subjective. For example - and I'm not saying they are - your expectations might simply be unrealistic.

The guys in this forum talks as if you need a Mac Pro to run Safari & Mail

In the next weeks I will buy an iMac 21', the one that costs 1,399$ for 1,499$ with a 1TB HDD, I will get a Thunderbolt SDD eventually, but that's all I can do since the RAM is soldered.

I think it will be fine for the next 3 years, I will use it for Pixelmator, iDraw, iWork, Plex Server, iMovie and soon Photos :)

If you want to play games, just get a console.

the RAM isnt actually soldered, its still normal 204pin sticks, you just cant get at them. If you take apart the machine then you can upgrade it, but that involves taking out the screen and all that. Some people, like me, would trust themselves to do it, although it would be hard to convince myself to risk it.

Agreed with aevan. As long as it works out of the box, contains the hardware you were promised, and does the tasks it was advertised to be capable of, it has not been falsely advertised whatsoever. Whether it meets your quality control and performance expectations is a different matter entirely.

I just got mine and I love it ! I do photo editing and no gaming. This thing is beautiful ! I did notice Yosemite lag a little when maximizing some windows but that's not an issue for me...I'm sure it will be corrected in updates.

Simply put, this is the best computer I've ever owned ! :)
