I bought an external hard drive for my Nvidia Shield TV. I was transferring files to the new hard drive which is formatted to NTFS. I have the NTFS plugin on my computer. It was going good, and then I felt like the transfer was slowing down. It was fast. I decided to restart the computer, and now the iMac doesn't recognize the portable hard drive. It shows up on Disk Utility. It's grayed out. I try connecting the hard drive to Windows using Parallels, but it always says the hard drive is busy.

I connected the hard drive to my MacBook, and it shows up. What could have happened on the iMac?

Which plugin are you using to allow read/write to NTFS? Some plugins such as Tuxera are prone to errors and can cause corruption. The only plugin I personally recommend is Paragon NTFS which works well.

I am using Paragon. I tried to do First Aid in my MacBook, and it does say it needs to be repaired in recovery mode. When I start it in that mode the portable hard drive doesn’t show up. :/

Try an nvram reset, Apple Support site here.

If the drive was not ejected properly, the Mac thinks it is connected, and doesn't try mounting it. I have seen this on several occasions.
