My iMac monitor keeps flickering and then screen gets dimmer.

My monitor on my 27 inch iMac, will flicker like a light bulb and then the monitor gets dimmer. Have tried all the settings to no avail.
Running version 10.8.3 Processor 3.4 GHz Intel core i7
16GB of memory

Wondering if the monitor is bad or has a short circuit in the wiring.
Have called tech support and have not resolved the issue yet.

Sounds like a hardware issue and not a software issue.
