My imac will not boot up!

My iMac boots to the point where it has the apple logo on screen and the spinning gear. The gear stops spinning and it just stays like that forever. I have tried switching on and off a few times but it just stalls each time.

There should be no reason to reinstall the OS. At worst, an Archive & Install may help.

What version of OS X are you running on your iMac? Has any software changes been made recently (i.e. Software Update or a newly installed program)?

Thanks folks! Disc utility did the job. All back to normal again. Panic over.
