FWIW this smeary, noise reduction problem also happens on the 15x side of the 14P digital zoom. I hope MKBHD is right that, like Google, Apple will sort this problem out with another years worth of experience with this new sensor.
Maybe next year with 15 series ? Don’t have high hopes tho

But if they have the new Sony sensors that let in even more light , it will become even more superfluous to give such amount of post processing

Here is a macro I just took of one of my watches. Shot in ProRAW and edited. Your camera probably isn’t crap, it could be your technique. It takes practice. These other videos posted by those reviewing the new iPhone aren’t photographers, just tech reviews. They wish they knew what they were doing LOL.

To shoot macro, you need a steady hand and proper lighting.

Hi everybody,
i received my new iP14pro two days ago.
Everything seemed to be fine at first. No dings or scratches, no dead pixels or colour tint - nice.
Then i took the first photos to check the image quality.
Arrghh - the quality of macro shots is terrible. They all look some kind of blurred in detail (like compression artefacts).
Even my old iP 5s makes better macro shots.
I tried all the settings of the camera app, made a clean install and even reinstalled iOS 16.2 completely with my Mac.
The result remains the same and is absolutely annoying for a 1300 € device.
As i'm doing a lot of watch shots, her are two details - one shot with the iP 14pro, the other one with my old iP 12pro.
Both taken with the original camera app. Same settings, same lightning conditions.
The sharper image is from the 12pro (of course:mad:)
Try ProRAW to see if an improvement is visible.

iPhone 14 P.
Mine faffs about trying to autofocus...Which can cost me an opportunity.
It is compounded by a frequently non responsive touchscreen( app wide issue, but I reckon it is the bug ridden iOS 16).

Use Halide or pro camera and manually focus the camera & use focus peeking. You’ll get much better results that way. The depth of field is way too shallow for auto focus that closely.

I use ProCamera, but this was just the stock camera app on autofocus. I had the lens so close to my eye that I could almost feel it touching me. I had my hand holding my iPhone resting directly on my nose for support. I was pretty happy and surprised with the result.

How about a basketball portrait taken with my iPhone 14 Pro max. I used two Neewer light wands in clamshell form (one over the head, one under) for the lighting. I used the 3x camera and edited in Lightroom. I almost impatiently waiting for BeastGrip to release the new 1.7x telephoto lens so I can get closer with the 48mp camera. The second shot was lit from the side using one light wand with barn doors attached.

I have a question. How exactly do you view a photo at 100%? Is double tapping 100%? Is pinching in as far as it will go 100%?

Yes I believe a double tap is 100% or close. Pinch to zoom all the way is approximately 800%. The iPhone 14 pro max screen resolution 2796x1290 and a 12mp photo is about twice that or so. Therefore a double tap should bring the view to 100%. Going beyond that by zooming in is where users begin to complain about the camera image quality because they are zooming in way too far and the image quality gets worse.

Back in my day, I could always use photoshop, or any Raw program or whatever, on my iMac to view 100%. Never any reason to view beyond that other than isolation, etc.

Just never knew what was actually 100% on the iPhone or iPad. It’s hard to judge quality of an image if you don’t know how to view it at exactly 100%.

In pics like yours the problem would not be visible at all, even with my iP14pro, because there are no small lines or texts in it like in my watch pic.
Still not an issue even with text. Sorry for the dusty watch lol

it does have a problem with the focal distance with the new sensor but shouldn't be that bad to be fair

Outstanding! I love this. I will have to get this app.

Edit: There is one for $5.99 and one for $3.99. Do you know what is the difference?
Thanks… I know the more expensive option allows for RAW capture. The price is much lower. I paid $18 I think. So the $6 option give you all access. Great app. It also blurs clouds during the day water during the day and stores at night. Vehicles on the highway etc..

Have you ever considered posting in the Photo of the Day thread? A lot of really nice stuff shared there.
