I've had an iPad 2 (no camera) mouldering on a shelf for about 9-10 years and wonder if it is possible to run some other operating system than the nacient version of iOS that is currently installed on it.

Jailbroken a long, long time ago.

What I need is to run some sort of Linux-based system on it.

If it doesn't have a camera, then it's probably an iPad 1st gen. iOS 5 is the highest, and I am not aware of any other OS you can install on them.

What's the latest version of iOS you can run on it?

You said it was an iPad 2 so if it's an iPad Mini 2 you can still run iOS 12 which is still receiving updates from Apple.

But with iOS you get tablet optimized apps.

If I could get an iPad 2 on Amazon with iOS 6 or below (I miss the design of the OS before 7) instead of it being upgraded as far as it will go (every phone from Amazon has been this way) I'd do it. I really want to use older iOS again. I am sick of flat UI.

I don't worry about security since I am not stupid and don't go on porn sites, so that aspect doesn't bother me.

My concern is that getting an iPad 2 from Amazon means it will have iOS 9 since they always update them to as far as they'll go. It's a shame I can't just choose iOS 5 as the default.

I think an outdated Apple device is still far more secure than an outdated Windows device.
