I bought my iPad 3 at the launch in Spring 2012. I am a very careful user and took a very good care of the device - used only at home and never used in direct sunlight and never dropped it either.

About 5 days ago, I noticed my iPad 3 getting really warm all of a sudden. And, it's been getting really hot everytime I use it ever since. The overheating never occured until this week.

The entire back gets really really hot and the all 4 sides of the front bezel get really hot as well. It overheats either when it's plugged or unplugged.

Should I take it to the Apple store and get it checked? I am now afraid this extreme overheating might ruin the inside of my iPad. :(

Any advices?

Could be a number of things. One possibility is that an app is stuck on so that the processor is running all the time. Try closing all your apps then restart. If that fails then take it to an Apple store and have them check it out. I had a similar issue with an iPhone. I wound up having to do a restore but after that the battery issue totally cleared up. Good luck.

Back up and restore from that backup.

If that doesn't fix it restore and set up as a new device.

If that still doesn't fix it, bring it into Apple.

All iOS devices will automatically turn off at about 160 degrees. It is a built in safety. I would take it to the Apple Store and they will give you options. They have software to check your iPad for anything going on abnormally.

160 Degrees would surely scold you if you handled it!

I have noticed my iPad 3 gets incredibly hot when I'm charging it, but when the charger comes out it cools down in about 35 seconds. Just have to keep an eye on it when it's charging for me.

A rogue process is one possibility. If a restore doesn't solve it, I second going to the apple store.

IPAD 3rd Generation Questions

My IPad was purchased as a refurbished unit from Apple online earlier this year.
I noticed that it gets very hot during use and recently, I found it extremely hot when it had been charged.

Also, the battery seems to run down too quickly. I am a new user of Apple and may be unaware of programs running in the back.

I usually only close my device and turn it off completely once or twice a week.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you Forum
