i noticed the other day that my ipad is starting to fall apart. the plastic ring that sits in between the glass and the bezel is warping in random spots along the ipad (mostly near the home button and the corners). ive had it since launch and always has been in an incipio feather case that sits in an incase sleeve.

i only noticed it because it was sitting on a table where the sunlight was accenting the 'clean' ipads lines onto the glass.

anyone else seen this yet? i guess i should take it in to a genius but dont want a refurb...

"Falling Apart" - in my opinion equates to more than a tiny warp.

Let's analyze this: you're dissatisfied because of some perceived flaw in your device but you'd prefer to stick with the flawed device because of some concern that you'd get a flawless refurb in exchange?

Why are people so averse to refurbs? I mean, don't you know that the refurbs likely have HIGHER build quality and LOWER rates of failure than non-refurbs?!?

I haven't owned a new-from-retail Mac since I bought a Performa 630 sometime during the 90's. Even when my sons went off to college they got the latest & greatest refurb available. All have been excellent machines. I intend to continue down this path in the future.

With the iPad (and my various iPhones & iPods) I went with new, due to my impatience & love of shiny things.

Unless something is actually falling off of the iPad, I wouldn't worry about it.

As for refurbished Apple devices ... all of my refurbished Apple devices have been perfect.

That is how it is supposed to be however in my experience of changing multiple iPods, Laptops, BlackBerry's, and many other devices, refurbs always turned out to be worse than the original. In fact, the first device I buy happens to be the best - the ones after due to exchange (new or refurb) always turn up crap... maybe it's just me.

Mine got a dent in the back. I think it gives it character.

I dropped an aluminum-encased portable external drive on my 15" MacBook Pro (bought as a refurb) and it landed on its corner leaving a nice little ding. Neither device suffered any functional issues. Does give it a bit of character. It's like the Charles Bronson of MBPs.

Thats how my screen started out. It was just that rubbery, thin barrier that was going in a little. And now the whole screen is coming apart from the case :(

How loading did you have to tell yourself that before you believed it?

I tried that with my first gen iPhone, big shiner on the aluminum back. Tried to live with it, made it 4 days before I bayed it and bought new.

I know this seems like an insignificant cosmetic flaw--but a warp like this can let in dust and sand which could cause more serious problems down the line.

You do realize that's a Macbook and not an iPad, right?

As I've gotten older I've gotten wiser. As long as the glass is not scratched or cracked, I ain't worrying about it, and that's because the glass is the main interface. I drive a Jeep Wrangler, and every dent and scratch gives it character. I also drive a SLK350, and a almost in invisible dent the size of my pinkie cost me $400 to fix... I have to pick my battles. A dent or scratch on the BACK of my iPad ain't one of them...

Yeah, and then the screen falls off and you have the brand new Mac Mini right?

I licked it, and now it has not just my DNA, but the DNA of millions of bacteria.

    Talk about character!

    :D

I have this same exact issue!

I'm too lazy to take pics, but I can see/feel a dozen distinct warps. They're not so obvious to see unless you try to look at it. But running your finger along the edge of the ipad, there's a clear waviness.

Should I be bringing this in to the apple store?
I've had it since launch, iPad basically stays indoors all the time.

I just bought an iPad two days ago. It was pristine and worked perfectly. After using it one night I too noticed warping of the black band across the top of the screen. I returned it the next day and it was exchanged for another new one. After using the second one one night it too did the same exact thing. Tomorrow I have an appointment at the Genius Bar to see what they say. The ipads, which are on display at Best Buy didn't have this issue so I'm not sure what's going on.
