out of the blue, my XR keeps losing signal. my wife will give me hell for not answering her texts, then i look on my phone and there are no service bars. this happens whether i'm on home wifi, or out and about using cellular service. the quick fix is toggling Airplane mode on/off, then i get all my bars back, but it's inconvenient as i never know at precisely what moment i'm losing service, and if someone's trying to reach me, this is a problem.

Any ideas why this is happening. i take good care of my stuff. the phone has never been abused in any way and looks as good as the day i got it. could i have inadvertently messed with a setting that's causing this, or is something starting to fail?

Maybe it's not your phone but your service provider, i had the same problem found out they rented bandwidth from Sprint but did not pay for full bandwidth, had nothing to do with my phone.

Try your sim in another phone to see if it’s your network or the device itself.

happens whether i'm at home on home wifi, or out in the wild...and my wife and son both have the same phone, with none of the issues

Hardware issue. Maybe the phone has dropped a couple times causing the antenna or component soldering pads to fail.

i can't say i've never dropped it, but i can say that i don't drop mine a fraction of the amount that most people drop theirs...and i've never dropped it really hard. at 5 years old it looks to be in better condition than most peoples' do after a year or less.

of course there's always the possibility that one time i dropped it "just right", in the worst way, that could have caused all this.

Recently it was actually solid for about 4 days straight. no issues. then i cursed it when i thought to myself, "hey, looks like that problem went away"...and just like that the problem reappeared.
