Beyond disappointed with the battery life of the iPhone 14 Pro.

I am coming from 12 Mini and 13 Mini so the main reason I tried the 14 Pro was to get a better battery life. It was not the case.

I tried two separate iPhone 14 Pros, I tried all possible options, including iCloud Restore, factory fresh, I tried iOS 16.0.2 as well as iOS 16.1 beta. In all cases, the battery on the 14 Pro was not good and actually worse than the battery on my 13 Mini which is nuts.

The worst was when I took a simple two hour walk listening to a podcast on Spotify with no other apps in the background. My 14 Pro went from 100% to 61% in just two hours, with the phone locked and in my pocket with screen off. That makes no sense.

Anyway, I returned the 14 Pro and back on my dear 13 Mini. I hope Apple can solve the battery issues cause as it stands now, it's not worth the heavier phone if you're coming from a 13 Mini.

How has your battery life experience been with the 14 Pro?

It was on yes.

I would expect that even with AOD on, the 14 Pro would outlast the much smaller battery of the 13 Mini tho.
Agreed.

How long did you keep the 14 Pro? My wife’s 14 PM had pretty horrible battery life for almost a week before settling down. She initially turned off AOD but now it’s back on and battery life is comparable to my 13 PM. But that first week was bad. No idea what the phone was doing either.

I noticed my 13 PM gets burning hot now and then too. Killing all apps seems to fix it. Hopefully iOS 16 irons this out as time goes on.

I kept it for about 5 days.

I'm sure it's a iOS 16 software issue that Apple will eventually fix but I found it super frustrating to be worried about battery on a brand new iPhone 14 Pro. Like actively searching for a charger in the middle of the day. Defeated the whole purpose and killed any remaining excitement. Will have to reconsider the phones once Apple solves the issue.

My brand new 14P has the same battery life as my 11 with an 86% battery. Really, really sucks since one of my main reasons for upgrade was getting enough battery to make it through a 6-hour work shift of driving. Nope! Not even close. Thinking about swapping it for a 14+ if the battery figures on that one are to be believed. Happy to trade dynamic island and a "better" camera for an extra 2.5h of battery life.

Some batteries are just awful from the start for whatever reason. My 13 Pro went down to 99% after 3 months of usage, 25 cycles if I recall. I used iMazing to look at the stats, and the battery capacity was below the "designed capacity." I got the battery replaced and it was better.

My 14 Pro is getting the same battery life as my 13 Pro did, not noticing any drastic change, and this is with AOD on.

my Mini 13 would need to be topped off a couple of times a day. my 14 Pro can go from dawn to dusk with 40% left.

you must have had a corrupt app or something causing excess drain.

Like others have said, the 14 Pro has both a physically larger battery making this likely either a singular faulty device or something software based.

Some items have been mentioned but some other ideas:

  1. You note "no other apps in the background" as part of your description. It does NOT help to force quit apps in the background to help your battery life, in fact in some circumstances it can be worse for battery life.
  2. As others said, there is an indexing period of time, it also sounds like you were on a cellular connection - I wonder if there was any iCloud/download/etc. activity going on via cellular in the background
  3. I'd also like to have seen your battery usage graph as well as app usage. I suspect one app on your device may need to be reinstalled.
Either way, this was not normal behavior, and I'd encourage you to give it another try with a new device.

Apple Support said wait for an update.
After disabling AOD and other changes Battery is still not as good as iPhone 13
Acording to Apple
14 PM should get an hour more of battery life on average depending on what you’re using it for

That's not long enough. It takes a week or so for all the indexing to happen, and then everything settles down to a more normal situation. I bet if you gave it a real chance, it would be fine.
it sure is as I've experienced the SAME battery life times with my 12 mini at 82% battery health. The 14 Pro I had for 4 days got about another 2hrs more which was atrocious.

Remember many have only 14 days to assess a phone before passing their buyers-remorse timeline with their carrier. I felt no-ways returning the 14 Pro no matter how beautiful it looked. Funny I wasn't a fan of the stainless steel sides becoming fingerprint magnets.

My 14 pro has been awesome on battery. Way better than my 13 Pro. That’s with heavy use and AOD on.

The first week mine and my wife’s were pretty terrible on battery but they have since leveled out and been great.

My 14 PM has been great with battery performance. I went 36 hours without charging and it only went down to 34%.
I went through a bunch of apps that I don’t use and never used and deleted them. Also turned off background activity for a bunch of apps I don’t need to have it on.
There are apps that could really tax a battery. I’m inclined to believe some 3rd apps aren’t optimized to be battery efficient.

The battery life of my 14PM has been comparable to my 13PM, which is very good. I do have AOD on, but I set my phone face down when not using. Location and app refresh are both off. I set up as a new phone as well.

11 hours almost on 38 hours since charged

I’m running the current 16.1 beta on my 14 Pro. Battery life has been excellent for me. Medium usage today and currently at 73%. Started using the phone around 9am.
Other items to note: AOD is on, haptic keyboard off, all location services on, all background refresh on.

Much better battery life than my 13 Pro.

Good luck!

Did you give your 14 Pro at least 2 weeks to settle in? A lot of people seem to be seeing better battery life a week or 2 after activation.
Did you have Background App Refresh on?
